Pete,

the cool thing is your spinet piano looks a bit like a bulky harpsichord as well. I'd love to hear what it does.

Is there any decent substitute to real harpsichord?

I'm in love with the sound of this instrument. I hear it in a lot of music I like (Beach boys, Modern Jazz Quartet, soundtracks,?). So far all the imitations I've heard of that sound were ludicrous. Has anyone found anything nice that can be used as substitute during recordings?

Buzz problem on my TAB V78 preamp : help!

Hi, Since I've used the +48V switch for the first time, my V78 has been making a buzz noise that increases with gain. I'd like to send it for repair to the US but because of custom duties that would cost me almost as much as its original price. I emailed Oliver Archut at TAB-Funkenwerk and reckons t...

Get the Lollar P90 pickups. These will make a massive improvement to your sound. The difference between them and the stock Epiphone ones (they're Japanese Gibson copies) are like night and day.

don't know where the author found them originally. Or did he make them up?

Omni mics are sensitive to sounds coming from ALL the axises in space around them. (front, back, up, down, sides, etc?)

Cardioid mics are sensitive to sounds coming from only 33% of these axises, etc?

I don't know the ratio for figure-8.

what is figure-8 ambient sound sensitivity?

Omni is 100%

cardioid is 33%

hyper-cardioid is 25%

How about figure-8?

Interesting.

I wonder why the V78 is so rarely talked about or even mentioned on this board.

How would you compare the V78 with the hamptone?

UA610 or Hamptone tube pre?

I need another tube mic pre to go with my Tab-funkenwerk V78.

I want to get a different colour from the V78 just for the sake of variety, and I've narrowed my search to these 2 preamps.

Which one would you recommend?

A great example of nice modern jazz recording is this one done at "Studios la Buissonne". It's a Lennie Tristano theme covered by 7 players. Great arrangements, great modern studio sound.

The early Miles Davis recordings for Fantasy and Prestige have a great charm but more because of what musicians play than how they sound. I can't really hear the drums or the bass on these records. But one can hear the room and all the instruments resonate together as one organism, which is nice. Th...

Wes Montgomery (if that's who you mean when you say "Montgomery") was never recorded by Columbia as far as I know. I was thinking about Monk but wrote Montgomery. My brain is tired? There are pictures of so many different jazz players at Englewood Cliffs studio, that i doubt he was making the effor...

Late 50's to mid 60's jazz records is my favourite kind of sound. I call this 'vintage clean' as engineers like Rudy Van Gelder were after perfect transparency and authenticity, but had to pass sound signal through many if not all tube equipped stages (from tube mics to tube tape recorders). The res...
