I'm glad there's a thread on L Gore as I've always been impressed by how clean her recordings sounded for the time.

The V78 is a great preamp. It sounds thick, luscious with a very smooth attack. Extremely beatley. Colored but not muddy. Slow but still very detailed. A great buy.

I've just listened to Blackbird in realplayer format. Okay, this guy changed the world 40 years ago, but I think he lost it totally as a vocalist. He's an old man sounding like an old man singing a young man tune. The vocal grace and ease is gone. It's almost painful to listen to that.

The interesting thing about him is that he doesn't use compression while tracking apparently. I guess that's one of the many reasons why he records so much so fast. That's also probably how he manages to accumulate so many layers of instruments without making things sound too stuffy.
