I just pick up a pair of KRK Rokit 5's that I'm really happy with.
It's a huge improvement over my Alesis Monitor 1's. The KRK's were $300 at Guitar Center.

Do 90% of the mix on the big speakers then switch to the near fields. This has changed my life and improved my mixes beyond what should be possible. My mixes have high end now! Amazing. Also check you mix with a freq. meter. I use the Roger Nichols Inspector plug-in. Beyond that......don't drink 10 ...

Tascam 122 MKII cassette deck. $50 on Craigs List. It does a very nice slap back delay which is all I really use it for.

1960's Shure 535 omni dynamic. Sounds great.

MXR Micro Amp. I've been using it as a pre-amp for my Rhodes. It makes a world of difference.

I'd put the $300 towards mics for your toms. 57's are fine but won't capture the lows as well as others will. Anything you would put in front of a kick drum will work better than a 57 on toms. Also try micing the top and bottom skin. If you're going to use a 57 put it on the top skin and put somethi...

Update - parallel compression of the 421 track seems to have done the trick as far as getting the low end boominess under control. I sent it out to my Altec 1612. Sounds great blended with the other bass tracks. I have a little work to do on the DI track but I'm well on the way. Adding more point to...

I forgot about parallel compression. That might be just the trick. Mainly I'm looking for the right ballance between beefy low end and mid/high end articulation. Right now any compression I've added has killed the transients and made the bass too sludgey. Parallel compression might be just what the ...

try harder.... any particular reason why you aren't trying both mics together? When both mics are combined it just gets too muddy. They're both doing the same kind of thing. The M88 acts as a hi-fi 421 and the 421 acts as a dirty/gritty M88 (if that clears things up at all). On some songs I need th...

Help Mixing Bass

Hi folks I'm working on a dance-punk record (think Gang of 4) and I'm having trouble getting the bass to sit right in the mix. The bass player plays a Stingray or Jazz Bass through an SVT and 8x10. I have 3 tracks to play with - #1 - Radial JDI direct to UA 610 pre to PT #2 - Beyer M88 to True Preci...

Agreed. I have both and, just like markitzero, only really use the ADA8000 to output to my mixer.
I have used the pre's and there ok. Not great, not even really good but ok and very usable. The converters seem to be on par with the Digi. I haven't really noticed a difference between the two.

If you're on a Mac (and PT) you can get the Jk_irr for free. It's a pluggo so you need to download the fre pluggo runtime to make it work. It's pretty great and there are a few free impulses out there online. You can also make your own. +1 on the whole pre delay thing. It makes a world of difference...
