He really wants clarity and definition. Any suggestions for this situation - or future recordings (to get a clear defined sound with his particualr bass and EQ settings)? There is this very difficult to attain sound when the bass has a very defined low end that doesn't struggle with the kick drum. ...

This goes into that whole role-defining question of engineer as audio problem-solver vs. engineer as sound painter/sculptor. I do think if you suspect it's all 'right' you need to make some really light handed rough mixes (just do levels, balancing, panning) and then take it to some other stereos. I...

Yeah that is an interesting mix of gear, kind of half mega-pro, half mediocre pro-sumer.

What school is that, if you don't mind me asking/digressing?

I gotta say (by no means a judgement against the op) I wish I was in the position of owning a Royer when I was asking questions about how to mic a guitar amp.

Start with the best- your gonna be a star :)

Re: A fistful of microphones

One last question- the RE50 rattles when I shake it. It still works, but a mic that rattles can't be a good thing. How do you open up an RE50? I'm sure I can fix the rattle if I can get into it. It doesn't seem like it wants to unscrew. Any suggestions? That same issue was really the 'death rattle'...

You know, I sang the praises of the PR30 as a guitar mic for quite a while. And then I realized I kept using it as a single mic for a scratch, not liking it at all, re-recording the guitar with a combo of it and the AT4033. The awesomeness of the guitar sound had a lot less to do with the PR30. It's...

The side grill, I believe, has something to do with reducing the effect of proximity effect. The switch is the high pass filter. It is useful. You should see their little flat line or diagonal line etched into the side. With flat response you can get awesome guitar tones. With flat response you can ...

I've found I can get a drier snare drum sound by pointing my snare drum mic more across the top head than my usual diagonal-through-the-drum. Using things put on the drums to dampen them is good- small towel on the snare, or tape a sock to the outside edge, get some moon gels. Put a RE20 or a SM7 ne...

After borrowing an RE10 for ages I had to get my own. So awesome! Sounds better than my Heil PR30 on guitar tracks for about 1/4 of the price.

Anyone know what that 'reedy' kind of wail sound that happens on that record. It almost sounds like a clarinet or saxophone mouthpiece played without the horn part. It happens low down in the mix like five or six times on that record and it always sounds lonesome. Love it. I need to hear the new Cal...

+1 on Sytek. You should also think of the Burr Brown mod on a couple of the channels. I use those channels more than the other two. This will help achieve the vocal sound you want.

They all look so similar. I wonder what the difference in sound is. I'm gonna see if EV keeps the frequency response curves up on all these old mics.

E.V. RE10=best thing ever?

I know this is not original, but the RE10 I borrowed has been hot in all of the work I'm doing this month. SUCH awesome guitar tones, and some surprisingly great vocal tones. I was recording vocals for this country band with the RE10 through my Symetrix compressor, my room mate was sitting in on the...
