Re: Micing a Hammond with built in leslie

First of all, what kind of mic's do you already have on hand?

Second, consider this: place a cardboard tube about 12 inches in diameter 3-4 inches in front of the speaker. Then place a mic at the end of the tube for capture and 1 up close on the speaker (like you would a guitar cab).

Re: D'yer Maker

Zeppelin all the way baby!

I was lucky enough to see Page and Plant on the No Quarter tour and they blew my head off...completely.

They are definitely called "gods of rock" for valid reasons.

Re: cheap sound treatment

703 Fiberglass is fire resistant, easy to handle and you can cover it with fabric, leaving a lot of deco options open to you.

Here's one of the most comprehensive and easy to understand articles I've read that's really useful: http://www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html

Re: ORTF, NOS micing

In my humble opinion it's just a matter of how wide of a stereo image you want. XY config gets you a very tight stereo image that's very straight forward and up the middle. I find ORTF especially useful tracking acoustic guitars. Phasing doesn't have to be an issue either. As long as one mic has at ...

Re: Matched Mics

The Sound Room does a pretty good job at providing matched capsules. For instance, if you have an un-matched pair of MK-012's (like me) you can order a hand matched set of capsule pairs for chump change.

It's a quality place to shop too. They care.

Yeah, my brutha, we don't worry too much about humidity here in the high desert. We're still begging for humidity here. LOL

Re: So who's got carpet?

Right on, Trodden. Yeah, sometimes a rowdy lookin bunch of boys moving in next door can put a damper on the brady bunch expectations of modern society. Especially when there's drums and guitar amps involved. And I mean that in the nicest way; don't want to get Mr's Cleaver's panties "in a bunch". Ke...

Re: home studio signal path question

I agree with P, and I run my mic's into my pre's before the mixer too. Your mixer is your control over levels, EQ and balance while tracking and your pre's are how you breathe life to the mic's. Some don't like a mixer between the pre's and the DAW. I'm agree with you and consider my mixer a valuabl...

Re: getting a mix to translate

>I'm surprised nobody suggested your room is the culprit< Maybe because no one can tell it like you do Ethan. I've been reading alot of your articles recently and your expertise has been a huge help to me. I'm in the phase of setting up an informal control room after finishing a nicely usable isolat...

Re: So who's got carpet?

I just finished building an "isolation" room in my house and removed all the carpet and installed a parque wood floor. The acoustics are fantastic but there's a lot of work involved. But it's not like any of us are short on sweat, right? I recommend removing at least half of the carpet if not all of...

Re: where do you buy your cable

So far I've bought all of my cable's through Musician's Friend at www.musiciansfriend.com

I typically buy Mogami cable and assemblies and they have the best prices I've found so far.
