Hi,I've recorded tons of bassoon with the artist mentioned previously in this thread. It's a real challenge as the different frequencies emanate from different parts of the instrument, not to mention the sound of the circular breathing. The bassoon is a magnificent instrument but really needs to int...

Another thing to bear in mind is that really high end tube gear (in good shape, btw) has a subtle quality about it, and won't come out and smack you with a sound that says TOOB! It's a subtle quality, a texture to the sound, not so much "warmth" or "thickness" that most imagine a tube would impart. ...

So, IMNLBHO, here's the kicker- You just started hearing the differences, which brings a few important questions to at least my mind: 1.the correlation of a spec sheet to a sound is difficult to link - sometimes the "high performance" op amp is not the best for sound. (I also scoff at the spec sheet...

The differences range from merely textural to huge, depending on the source. To really illuminate the differences in tests, use varieties of harmonically and transiently rich sound sources (like gongs, cymbals, key tree, doumbek, flute, bowed instruments), and of course a variety of appropriate mics...

I wonder how you came to those specific conclusions. I find it interesting that you don't have api or any 500 series stuff listed there. Your mics are plenty fine, btw, as long as you use them well. I do appreciate you trying to find a "ringer" preamp, as I find them to make every mic, regardless of...

Re: Best All-Round 500 Series Pre (1st in the rack)

Sorry if this topic is posted often... Just got a 500 rack and I'm looking forward to filling it up. I am looking for the best all around 500 series preamp for my first "pro-level" preamp I am looking at: Great River MP-500NV A Designs P-1 Shadow Hills Mono Gama Purple Audio Biz API 512c OSA L3 Imp...

for me having better converters (higher bitrate, deeper bitdepth too) isnt about getting all that info to tape. I dont think that the end listener is gonna hear the paint peeling on the walls behind the guitar amp. sometimes I use dynamics or EQ ITB. In those cases I find it makes a bit of differen...

I have recently been using a variety of convertors (Benchmark, Metric Halo, Valley Ind., and now Apogee), and I resonate with what Joel had written about Apogee. I don't consider them the "only" convertors on the planet, but I simply like the way they sound for many reasons. I work faster on them, a...

Hi,
I have used Logic 7 and 8 with the 2882 WITHOUT dsp, and found the drivers and function to be amazingly perfect. I wish all installs worked this well.

I have not used the DSP versions.

you can shape a saddle quite easily, if you have a belt sander for the big stuff, then use a section of glass with sand paper taped to it, and rub the saddle against that for final shaping. You can try many different materials as well. A local counter store may have Corian that they can cut for you....

It's been a while, but I've spoken to Oliver at length about matters in the past on Pre's he didn't even sell me! If you're not feeling up to it yourself, perhaps there is someone there who can work with Oliver and have the parts sent to you?

Just a thought. I hope it all goes well.

Best,

If you are getting good volume in full power, I doubt it's the xformer. Probably hosed 1-2 of the output tubes is my guess. It's easy to swap them, just to see if that corrects the buzz. If the buzz was consistent, I would check all your tubes and grounds, but since you described it as relating to t...

another vote for garageband. I've watched so many "non-technical" peeps really dig in and make great stuff with it. I can't use it, but I've watched it become a gateway drug to many things audio..

There a few ways to do this. Let's see if can remember them without it in front of me, but first (caveat, it's late, I'm far too overworked, and a bit punch drunk, so try to hear Mike Tyson's voice in your head while reading this)... You have to make sure the busses (or aux objects) exist in the env...

They are great mics, but your reasoning may be oversimplified, at least with what you stated. You fail to mention what mic pres you are going to use, esp. with the royers. The mouse is not "fat" in my book, as much as hyped on top, but in a nice way that clears up dark sources. There's not enough in...
