...And he can still do it. And it's just as _deceptively_ simple (but very hard to copy legitimately).

Re: Empire of the Sun / Sleepy Jackson vocal tricks
That's a great plug-in, btw... But seriously, if I'm understanding what/which section that you mean, it sounds like multiple lead vocals (doubled minimum, but 3 or maybe more), plus maybe a whisper track (or at least a very close miking thing-- there's a lot of "character" to the vocal), and then de...

Re: George Martin disses Ringo
Yeah; the way I take it in context (he said they are _all_ enormously talented) was in regards to Lennon/McCartney and Harrison's songwriting credits. Anybody would have a hard-time being compared side-by-side to arguably some of the greatest songwriters in history. Plus, this interview was from 197...

I have a set of OSP's that are pretty decent, and very inexpensive (somewhere between $50 and $90 each?)...
I can't remember the model number, but they're pretty easy to find.

Re: That kind of snare sound
Hey Tony, I play a lot of hand-percussion too; in fact, nowadays, for some reason, it's about all I can play most of the time (carpal tunnel in both wrists, but the congas and djembe don't seem to bother them). The one thing I picked-up from seeing Jim Chapin was that 8th note hi-hat thing-- where h...

Re: Feedback prevention trick:Myth or Fact (live sound quest
Regardless of which thesis turns out to be "most true" in this debate, I've found that a good rule of thumb is-- "It's _always_ 2K or 4K."

Re: That kind of snare sound
Chris, do you play with the Moeller technique? Have you found it helpful?
I took an hour-long lesson with Dom F. once on the subject (for which he was mostly on the phone/out of the room)... Didn't do much for me, but maybe it was all in the presentation...

Re: That kind of snare sound
I would try a larger drum (14X6 & 1/2 rather than 14X5 & 1/2); I have a metal Pearl drum that makes that kind of sound, so you could go metal or wood. Not just the drum and the mics, but the actual snares (width and number) can change the tone too. As mentioned, not too loose, but not too tight. Sam...

Re: Post embarrasing rookie mistakes you made
Read Milosz' "The Captive Mind." If they tell you that the front of the microphone is on the side, well, it is. If you must stand on your head to record a vocal take, then that is because "Socialist History" has pre-ordained it...

Re: Offered work but not sure who the artist is
Do they want to work in your studio, or have you work somewhere else? How did they contact you? Did you ask them how they found you? Was it a recommendation from a friend or associate that you know and trust? Have they offered a contract that you both can sign, or have they even mentioned it? Have t...

Re: change tubes in cheap mic pre?
I have heard that changing the tubes in your inexpensive/Chinese tube gear will be very beneficial.
Unfortunately, I cannot comment from personal experience, because I have the same ART unit, and it still has the stock tube (after about two years of use)...

That's what I was wondering... Why the SansAmp in this case, instead of a straight-up passive DI?
