Re: anyone working at 96k?

24-bit and 48k for years.

There are a lot of ways I can still improve my mixes. Sample rate isn't one of them.

Re: Please recommend some small but mighty speakers

I wound up going with the KRK 5 inch dealios for about $300. They just sound super solid to me, for their size. They have crazy dsp on the back, I think, to dial in their sound. Maybe I'm just used to KRK's? I'd have recommended these for this need. Those KRKs are like the sm57 of monitors. Useful,...

Re: let's talk monitoring / accurate sound reproduction for mixing

Have you used the room eq wizard to measure your current setup? It might be interesting to compare the two pairs of monitors also.

I just got Soundtoys, like all of 'em. Black Friday sale of $230 was too good to pass up.

And the mic's a Donner, so you know it comes to party. (I bet it eats other mics for lunch too.)
Moderators, please close the thread. It peaked right here and cannot possibly offer anything better than this.

Re: a U-87 for under $70?

I wonder how this stacks up against the bargain basement MXLs. I have no reason to ever touch this thing, but for some 15 year old who wants to mess around and get started. Totally awesome.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I just ordered a Korg Volca Sampler. I've been nerding some electronic music and it's about as cheap as a stomp box. After dusting off my Alesis drum machine I want to make/tweak more of my own samples and I like the tactile element of programming beats on a 16 step sequencer.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

This is true! Or you could just wait for that magic "You know what this track really needs? A guitar that squeals like a stuck pig!" moment. I'd say about once a year that's exactly what the doctor ordered around my place. I've kept an instrument around for dumber reasons than that (I'm looking at ...

unfortunately the pickups are pretty microphonic. kick on the Carl Martin plexitone and it squeals like a stuck pig... (where other guitars with better pickups don't). This is one thing that most of the Firefly's seem to have in common.
Well, pickup upgrades can be fun.

Well, you wouldn't want your podcast viewers to see the usual coathanger + old sock combo, would you?
It was pantyhose, and it was almost brand new.

Re: Deluxe Yankee Hotel- a production master class

i will have to check that out, it is a fantastic album, definitely a seminal record of that time/band. personally i think Jay Bennett is the unsung hero of that album even though he was vilified in the documentary "i am trying to break your heart". he was kicked out of the band and they never sound...

I have 421s but the off axis sounds always get to me.
They manage to capture a bit of everything else happening on the kit and run it through a "shit" filter. Maybe it's because I have a newer one but that mic is in the overrated category to me.

Deluxe Yankee Hotel- a production master class

Wilco has released their massive Yankee Hotel Foxtrot deluxe edition with an endless stack of early versions, demos, alternate mixes etc. For music makers familiar with the album it's very educational. So much to learn about production, arrangement, mixing from these less refined versions. There are...
