Re: what's your favorite multi-pattern mic?

I like the CAD M179 for multipattern stuff.

Re: 421 vs. c3000

I love the 421 for guitar cabinets, some vocals, drums (close up or out in front). Works great on conga drums. I even like on horns some times. All around great mic. I have used it on acoustics a few times, but it isn't my first choice. Good for when I needed to have less sheen and more punch out of...

Re: recording F#%$ing HARDCORE vox

I agree with Dave, it's the singer, not the knob. (unless the singer is a knob...) I had a friend who mastered the art of the low volume scream. He was a speed metal singer and could do a whole song with intensity while we walking down the street and never get above conversation level. I also heard ...

Re: the ONE thing my mentor taught me...

It was a very short internship and the engineer who I was working for took me aside after a particularly bratty group of rich daddy's-boys left the studio after adding yet another three hours worth of finishing touches to their suburban pop-metal opus. I don't remember the exact words but in effect ...

Re: $10,000

Flipping through Mercenary Audio, Sam Ash, Musicians-Gear and my memory of how much I paid for used stuff, this is what I came up with. There are undoubtably much better deals to be found, given the time, if I had to do it like Iron Chef and have it all ordered and on its way by the first commercial...

Re: Could someone please help the newbie?

it could be a number of things (which is the first thing you'll hear whenever you ask for advice.) This doesn't sound like an alignment problem. With those, you still hear stuff, it just sounds weird. If the head would be so dirty that it wouldn't print a signal, you would be seeing the crust and it...

Re: Favorite oddball microphone?

Astatic 335H-7 crystal mic. it looks like one of those 1950s shavers. Quite excellent on the bottom of a snare pointed at the traps. Also great on theremin, of all things.

Re: The Great Sounding Room

Oooh, here are some of the rooms I thought were great sounding. a converted factory with exposed brick walls, all four sides, and the ceiling was big thick timbers that were about 1 foot thick and 2 feet wide as the rafters spaced about 4 feet apart. The ceiling was a good 15 feet or so and the room...

Re: mastering question

for very little clips you can smooth out the wave and see if that helps. sometimes it does, sometimes it just makes matters worse. The sound editing program Peak has a pencil tool that lets you do this. Doing that kind of edit sort of blurs the sound in that instance. If you aren't careful it will m...

Re: How do you record an acoustic?

Foley- I am glad you found what you wanted, I just wanted to pile on another thing: One time I mic'd the guitar with an sm57 over the sound hole where the player was strumming and sent that through a Deluxe Reverb with the tone controls flat and no reverb. I mic'd the amp with a CAD M-39. I mic'd th...

Re: your favorite reverb?

I like my Alesis Midiverb 4. The presets are pretty cheesy and useless, but messing with the programs can give some really nice reverbs. I got mine off ebay for about US$140.
