Re: Hating what you hear

It's art! So of course it's difficult and you don't like what you're doing. As long as you're still doing it, hoping to do better, then it's art. Happens in every medium.

Re: anybody running protools on linux?

Protools does not have a Linux version...

I've been using Ardour, which is native to Linux. Pretty good, still not quite done yet.

Re: Homebrew M/S stereo mic

A M/S matrix isn't that complicated... you just need the mid mic up the center, the side mic panned left, and the side mic inverted (polarity) panned right. The overall level of the mid mic controls width of image.

Re: moments you are proud of?

When I managed to fix an old Predicta TV set last year. Probably the most satisfying "ahh... it's alive" feeling I've ever had.

Re: Your new console

It has become my sad realization that it is not the equpitment I buy, the techniques I use, or the people I know that will hold me back as an engineer or producer in this world - it's not having any shiny shirts. Ian They have some excessively shiny shirts on clearance at the local Meryn's. Not tha...

Homebrew M/S stereo mic

The mic-building thread here is big enough, I think... and most of us have gone off and joined the "micbuilders" group at Yahoo Groups. Anyway, thought I'd share some clips recorded with a homebrewed Mid/side stereo mic array, using fairly simple circuits. My plan is to write up something on the ord...

Re: transformer question (kinda off-topic)

Ok well your description clears a lot of things up. I think what your looking for is a buffer. In this case i bet a transformer would indeed work (check out jensens site, good articles) but it will color your tone. Of course, so will a mosfet or jfet, though they are a bit more transparent. Anyways...

Re: transformer question (kinda off-topic)

Impedance is the "load" on a source. Sources only have impedance in that they can drive a certain minimum load... just like amps & speakers. Too many speakers in parallel gives a low impedance, and the amp bogs down trying to drive it. So with piezos there's a very high load impedance needed. Piezos...

I've seen E-100's that have the capsule "turned around"... so that you can point them down instead of up. Should be a pretty easy mod, given how the capsule is mounted.

Re: What Did You Work On Today? 5-5-04

Couple odd little internet forum things involving mic building, then I spent about half the afternoon finishing fixing a Rheem "Kee Bass" bass synth from the late 60's. That is one of the most beautiful instruments of the twentieth century. Lookin', I mean, I've never played one. You guys know abou...

Re: Counting Crows Fans???

I really like the first album... great B3 playing on a lot of the cuts, by somebody who knows how to play B3!

Satellites has got some good songs, but also a lot of self-indulgence. I never tried the third album.

Re: transformer question (kinda off-topic)

Piezos need to see a very high impedance input (5-10M ohm is best) to sound good. Lower impedances kill the low frequencies. http://www.cafewalter.com/cafewalter/fetpre/basspre1.htm is the one I based my buffer on. I ended up trading a few emails with the author, who was very helpful in adapting the...

Re: CAD Microphones

i have heard about them pretty often... they probably just aren't as common. but i've definitely heard lots of places and people using them and talking about them. there is this one mic of theirs that i've heard raved about for toms and kick. i forget what it is though. I think this may be it wing....
