Re: Pick a pre???????????
so you guys would go with two vtb-1s ($200) over a second aphex 107 ($250) for overheads? (tape op minis)
my first aphex 107 is for kick/snare and others (guitar, bass, etc)
thanks for the advice,
this is my last purchase for a while so i want to make it a good one.

mackie vlz pro vs plain old
Does anyone know if there is that much of a difference in the quality of the mic pres between the regular say ms1202 and the 1202 vlz pro? Does anyone like the sound of the older models?
thanks

Re: Alesis 3630 compressor

Re: diy mics - big fun for all!
here's a stupid question from someone trying to build these condensors from the tape op 16 article. here goes... do you solder the connections to the little capsule? its pretty small and i was worried that a 15W iron would heat this thing up so much that it would cook it. It mentions epoxy but that'...

Re: mastering to tape?
that sounds awesome, but i think that unit is like 10 grand. I am looking for something considerably less. JB suggested an AMPEX ATR-700. I can't find one of these so I am wondering if there is something comparable so i have more thatn one unit to look for.

Re: mastering to tape?
thanks all,
I really only want the tape in the chain to get the warmth and feel of a record recorded on 2" tape. Guys i admire like phil ek all use tape and i am just looking for a way to put that into my mix. maybe if 1/4" mixdown isn't the answer then i should look into plug-ins?

mastering to tape?
Hello, I record pop/rock at home using 24bit/48k computer DAW. Before i spend the money on a 1/4" reel to reel I am wondering if anyone else has mastered to tape and then converted back before CD burn? If so did it make much difference? I am wondering if it is worth it and would i notice a differenc...
