My buddy just picked up the Focusrite ISA828 (~$2k) and loves it. I think the lightpipe option is extra. Here's the link:

I am not a record mastering person, but I believe that anything headed for vinyl needs to be mastered for that medium. The powerful lows that digital audio can produce are beyond what the physical groove of vinyl can handle, so those must be rolled off or the stylus will simply jump off the record. ...

My God... It's full of stars! I feel this way about every Massey plug, but the new Tape Delay is unbelievably fantastic. Coupla different tone modes, a "modern / vintage" switch for gritty lo-pass goodness, and nicely analog behaviour when switching values on the fly. If you haven't checked out the ...

I saw Geoff and Howard speak in Seattle a month or two ago. During the Q&A period Howard shut the door firmly on the Beatle nerds who were massing to complain about "not enough recording details" or "this isn't the way this other guy said it happened", etc. His response was "this is Geoff's autobiog...

Yeah, although the faderport is a great little item, the fact that you can't control anything except volume with that cool fader totally BLOWS. I want to automate aux sends and fx parameters too. Whatever line is showing on the track view, that should be the line that the faderport controls. It can'...

Actually, what I'm saying is that every time we rely on the computer to do any task, or something, that's just one more time that we didn't use our own skills. I don't know all the stats or anything, but HAVING to do your own recalls (levels, EQ, whatever) will undeniably make you better at those v...

Bob Heil reports that his large-diaphragm PR-40 (approx $400 US) is perfect for this. During some field recording for one of the latest war movie blockbusters, the recording crew duct-taped a PR-40 to the barrel of some large-caliber rifles and were (figuratively) blown away by the sound. The PR-40 ...

One easy way to do this is the point system: Play in the band? That's a point. Write songs? That's a point. Engineer the album? Put up $$ for the CD? Handle the album marketing? All points. Add up everyone's points, divide quarterly CD income by that number to get X, everyone gets X times how many p...

Your Radial JDI (passive direct box) will double as a re-amp box easily - just feed a line-level signal into the XLR jack, and take the 1/4" inch out to your amp or pedal.

RTM if you don't believe me....

waves ate my plugins

I just upgraded from the Digi001 Factory (squoze the most I could out of it, too). Digi happily added some permissions to my iLok so the old factory plugs (BF-LP, BF-2A etc) would still be honored - no problem. Before I called Waves to see if they'd do the same, I talked with an experienced HD-using...

Hey, I'm in the market for an Apogee converter, too. How much you want for one? You can respond to the email in my profile, if you're interested.

Barring that, definitely donate to some young musicians around town - they'll remember you forever!

Sounds to me like you're in a pretty good position to negotiate a better salary. Doesn't need to be an ultimatum, per se, just point out that you're having trouble making it work at your current pay scale, and are looking into some "other options". If the situation is as you describe, and the manage...
