Definitely gating. Snare, toms, anything that will get "room ring" out of the multis. And don't forget to use gates to shape your kick - a good gate and a deft touch on the attack can make for unbelievable improvements in your kick sound. Don't be afraid of how obvious the gating is on individual tr...

Awesome Post-Election Song by Awesome

Hey, if you all are interested, check out this quick & dirty recording my buddies in the Seattle band "Awesome" made at my place to celebrate the new President-Elect.

Click on the mash-up photo HERE to hear the tune. This is the same band that I did the mix of Starship Trooper for a while ago.

You do not want a compressor operating on a pair of stereo mics to compress channels independently. If it did, and one side was activated by, say, a loud crash on one side, your stereo image would wobble, due to one side being ducked more than the other. Bad.

There is a ProTools HD rig that sits in my studio, gathering dust. I could be on crack, but there it is.
I think you're on crack. I'll give you $40 for that useless dusty old PT HD rig.

I have doubt you read the article above as you did not elude to 'power' in your post.
The word which is eluding you is "allude".

You can always retain the publishing rights to your compositions instead of selling them outright. You can also license your beats to a client non-exclusively. That is, tell them for this low low price, they can record over your beat and release their song, but you retain the right to sell that beat...

I was right in the middle of making a couple sets of these as the thread was posted, so I took a couple of photos and made a quick how-to for y'all: How to make Acoustic Absorption Panels (Gobos) These are thinner gobos for moving around, but I've got the same things hanging on the walls and ceiling...

I've had disc up on CD Baby for 7 years. It has sold 3 copies. Two years I put it through their digital distribution chain and it has only been placed in one service. That says something significant (and not very surprising) about your album, and absolutely nothing about CDBaby. I've had 5 albums u...

Used ADATs (and DA-88/38s) all through the 90s. Perfectly usable platform. Only had one tape eaten. Oh, and two error failures. Oh, and an $800 repair bill on two occasions. Still, not a bad little machine. However: Live recording? Sure, whatever. Editing? Comping? Creating in the studio? Not even c...

I think a lot of folks in the hardcore/metal etc scene have been doing this for years. Its pretty prevalent among the metal guys I know.
I wonder if that's why a bunch of stuff has sounded phase-y in the high end to me lately...

Thanks for the feedback! Definitely the biggest mixing challenge for me so far. There are two singers, and the one was right at the top of his range - he was a little bummed at the breaks into falsetto, but there was no way around it. Since it was just a "one-off" project, he decided to live with it...

"Awesome" Starship Trooper Cover

Hey all, I tracked and mixed a cover of Yes's "Starship Trooper" a little while ago, performed by local NW band "Awesome" as a special request. It's fully epic, clocking in at 9:30 and featuring all the instruments played by the 7-piece band, including accordion, theremin, banjo, mandolin, trumpet, ...
