Re: Most strange, overthetop, kinky studio techniques known2

one time we used a factory demo from an emax keyboard playing classical music through a boss distortion and a wah wah. it was just four beats of it. but it sounded like the meanest guitar part ever recorded. Also we once took a hank williams recording and turned it backwards fed it through a filter,...

there'a a free VST plug called the dominion.(<-- i think) that has the same idea behind it as the transient designer. you might give it a shot if your working in cubase or sonor.

Re: Trying to get two bass channels cleanly

i hate to tell you this. but it's probably just really noisy effects. all you can do is gate the thing or use a noise reduction plugin. i would try to mess with his effects and see if you can clean up the sound a bit. or let him use his effects through his amp, mic it up then take a direct signal st...

what cheap outboard gear can you not mix without?

i have some really bad pawn shop stuff that i use all the time. anyone else use cheap, (regarded as useless by the recording community) gear? some of my favorite's are: the alesis micro limiter - holy crap!! this thing squashes like nothing else and actually distorts in a good way. about $25 used. w...

Re: I'd like a new bass amp perhaps you could help.

The secret to the ultimate dub sound, for me, is the DOD FX-25b pedal, with the sensitivity set so that the filter never opens. Works for Bill Lasswell, works for me, and works with pretty much any amp setup. The pedal's like $25 used, $40 new (I splurged for a new one). I run through a relative br...

i've heard of people using dynacomps on drums.
do you use a D.I. in reverse to get the right level to these things?
just curious.

drum mic techniques

what mic's, pre's, compressors Eq's, ect. are folks around here using to record/mix drums?
i find it endlessly facinating to see what people are using to track/mix their drums.

Re: when recording a wurlitzer electric piano...?

i almost always put a 57 on the built in speaker.
it just sounds so good that way. sometimes i'll take the 1/4 inch out
into a little fender or a bassman. but i find the little speaker is the most authentic.

Re: Which 'Version' (Oktava 012)

i might be one of the only people who doesn't really love this mic. i have a pair from GC that are ok. definately a good mic for the money. i like it on under snare sometimes. don't like it much on overheads. but to be fair, i don't really love small condenser's as much as other people i know. there...
