The Chandler Mk.II has germanium transistors, which is what would have been used in 1969 on the last Beatles album. I know the arlier version sounds great, but this should even be an improvement above that, a smart move on their part. Most of the Beatles records were done with EMI's own tube (valve)...

The REVOLUTION mic pre is amazing, I just got one and have been using it a lot. It really has an magical kind of sound, but very hifi and warm. Best DI sound I've ever gotten. The build quality is beyond belief, a monster. And if it's "Beatles" sound you like, this would be the closest to what you h...

Maybe you aren't looking for what it does specifically well. The delay sound IS dirty and somewhat lo-fi, on purpose, but it is not noisy/hissy. This is an analog delay, what many people go for when they want a dark, lo-fi effect - rather than the clean digital stuff. People say that digital lacks c...

>>>what if it's accurate...?>>> It's a great effect, but no, it's not accurate. The 'room' is a set of photos taken in the 2002-era, not quite like it looked in the 60s, but they did a cool trick making it black and white. The band shots are old photos - you never get to zoom around the guys in this...

Actually, most 60's gear has positively amazing specs, truly HiFi. Incredible frequency range, compared to much 70's and 80's gear. My theory - they worked MORE fir midrange tone, as that's what came out of low-end record players and AM radio then. It didn't matter so much how subsonic things went, ...

Re: no money for a u47...but
Tough call. I'd say there IS nothing like a U47 in that range. They are all very different, but you can get a good mic. The PPA (Pacific Pro Audio) LD-2ube has a colored/recorded sound that you might like. But it's not neutral or hifi really. An AKG 414 is pretty common used, VERY flat response (muc...

Re: Recording The Beatles
We are well-connected with the Tape Op staff already: Kevin did some cover artwork already for the mag. I just saw two of the honchos at the NAMM Show. We hope to do something with them when the book is ready - like maybe take out an ad ;) We are still working a lot (on the book and other things). I...

Re: What Did You Work On Today? 2-05-05
Wanre Bros found an old YES 2" in the vault. We checked it to see what it was (and in case it needed mixing for some future reissue). It was the master tape of the 1970 "Perpetual Change" song from their first album, on pink BASF tape with green leader. Ah, England... Of all the YES masters I've see...

Re: Microphones used on Zeppelin songs
Soundguy is right; although he did not state it specifically, Led Zep II was recorded over a long period, all over the USA (and a bit in England) as they toured that year.
So - the likelihood is, there is no one "mic" to make that sound. And the sounds are all different, as pointed out above.

Re: Re-recording a great (or not so great) album
I think the trouble with almnost all Ramones albums (there IS quite a range of sounds and styles on there) is the mixing. We had the master tapes to most of them, as I mixed many of the outtakes found on the reissue CDs that just came out. However, the "rules of the game" are to make things sound li...

That new letter (in the Jan/Feb issue) from Pete Townshend is about as good a recommendation as a magazine could have.

Re: Cello studios in LA..
It's all true - and it's all up in the air what will happen. The likelihood of it remaining a studio is slim - the property is VALUABLE; they are surrounded by filmmaking enterprises and TV. Businesses that make a LOT more money than any studio could. About two years ago it was almost sold to make a...

Re: Marshall amp trivia
#7 is odd, as the earliest Marshall's I've seen - prototypes even - had black tolex. ALL the cabinets did... was there a non-black Marshall before 1969?
