+4 to -10 conversion?

I have a soundcraft 400b, on which i've been using the inserts (+4) as direct outputs to my fostex g16s (-10). I need a unit to convert 16 channels of sends and returns, but have no idea what I'm looking for. Help?

having only ever recorded my own band, and never recorded a drum sound i actually liked (granted i didn't have "the gear" the last time i attempted). i recorded the first drums i was truly happy with on the following setup last night. Overheads: Fat Heads in Blumlein (over the kick pedal basically, ...

this is tricky stuff... for my own band there are two lead vocalists, myself and matt. matt nails his doubles, with ease - usually the first time. he likes to hear the original take as he sings the double. i, however, am not so fortunate. pitch-wise, i'm usually there - but it's the timing that's ki...

Re: Mariage Blanc song - to make your recording sound more '60s, i would recommend a smaller drum sound - these drums sound loud, crisp and clear but not '60s - drums were more of a background instrument back then in most cases. most drums were mono back then, so mono all the way with as few mics a...

Pittsburgh, PA - Tape machine calibration

Hi all,

I have a fostex G16s that I believe is in need of calibration. Anyone know a tech in the Pittsburgh area who works on these machines?

Thanks,
-Josh

tried muting physically with foam before, but then it was too dead... perhaps i used too much foam? i really think those "rotosound" strings might be the ticket - my bassist has a set coming in soon and we'll string em up. i should say that the goal of this record - sonically - isn't to sound exactl...

also, there's already a thread about making a record without condensers - so i don't want this one to head there. but i'm gonna make an effort to use large diaphragm dynamics and ribbons wherever possible on this new record. guess i just have some idea in my head that it will get me closer to the so...

thanks for the input - that tune was done last summer and mixed around this time last year. most of that song was recorded digitally @ 44.1 / 16 bit with only the drums being done to tape / then later dumped to computer. this time around i'm doing the whole record to tape (until i run out of tracks ...

interesting thread! i'm curious to see what tricks come out of this - as i'm also about to start recording a record with late 60s pop production in mind. people consistently mention that live takes / bleed is important to the sound. sonically (ignore the amount of compression / limiting) do you thin...

i've done similar stuff when a vocalist has trouble hitting notes consistently...

i'll play the vocal melody on guitar or keys as a scratch track and just have them sting along with that.

i may be way out of line here, but cutting vocals with the 990 wouldn't be my first choice. That microphone is strange - it is a small diaphragm condenser inside a body that makes it look like an LDC. This very well might be the root of your problem... I remember attempting to sing into a MXL 991 (s...
