Re: in praise of the RNP
...I'd read many accounts of how a good pre makes all of your mics sound better. Now I think I've glimpsed a bit of that for myself... Absolutely. Of course, I just got done with a session this weekend where I ran a $20 Radio Shack mic through a Vintech Neve-alike, so my opinion may or may not matt...

Re: Small, incredible sounding records
...although I've seen lots of stuff on just how that incredible guitar sound was created, I've never felt completely satisfied by the answers and accounts out there. What were Spot and BM up to? Anyone know? It has, primarily, a kind of DI sound to it - and yet it's so much more than that. I read i...

Re: Huge, incredible sounding records.
What's up with Eric and where did all that talent appear from? Who was responsible for that album? Is Portland that cool? Inquiring minds wanna know! [/quote] Tony Lash did both of them, I think. Eric's a classically trained musician, with (if memory serves) classically-trained-musician parents. He...

Re: Recording Amp
Takeout: I'll be really upset if you start snatching up all the Alamo amps off of eBay. Please save me a few...i'm addicted to 'em. :) And should you dig the Alamo's, if you can find any of the tube Ace Tone amplifiers jump on 'em. They absolutely rock. No foolin'! Don't worry; I'm not rich enough ...

From the Brian Wilson/George Martin school:
Another option: track your drums to their own tracks, plus whatever guitar or bass or whatever will fit on the leftover tracks, then mix down to another machine (DAT/CD/2-track tape/whatever). Bring that mix back to one or two tracks on your multitrack, then continue overdubbing. Repeat as needed. P...

Re: Huge, incredible sounding records.
Maybe not "huge", but definitely "incredible sounding", at least to my ears: Eric Matthews "The Lateness of the Hour". It's like a warm blanket for your ears. Others: Bad Brains "The Youth Are Getting Restless" - Live in Amsterdam '87. My favorite live record. EXPLODES out of the speakers. Anything ...

Re: Recording Amp
...Another option would be to dig around on eBay for some small (4-12 watts) old tube amps- Alamo, Ace Tone, Danelectro, Rickenbacker, etc. I'm especially fond of the little Alamo tube amps and have scored many of the ones I've got for around $90. I usually end up spending a little money getting th...

Re: Recording Amp
Vox AC-15? Little pricey, but if it's worth it... Not if your budget is $600. I got mine for $300. Keep looking; they're out there. I also have a Les Paul Jr. Recording amp from the early 60's. Maybe 5W, little oval-shaped speaker, one knob (Volume)... SM57 to a decent pre and it sounds like a damn...

Re: Guitar Tones
Go the Tool route: four different types of amps running simultaneously, all set differently. Can be monstrous if handled correctly.

Re: Help Getting a Ampex reel to reel rapaired, In Western M
Step 1: Register with the Ampex user mailing list at www.recordist.com. Centuries of Ampex experience all in one place (some ex-Ampex employees post there too, including one of the guys who helped design my machine, the 440). They can help you troubleshoot. Step 2: Get a complete manual if you don't...
