Do you mean with "in parallel to the 428 into my 002" that you are running your 428 and the Avalon into the analog inputs of the 002 and now you're looking for something to hook up to the ADAT lightpipe to get another 8 inputs? Have you thought about using the 428's optional A/D converters for your ...

What you seem to forget when asking for a cheap dongle without the software is that it would be a way to bypass Digidesign's copy protection. You could just get a cheap USB dongle, install your buddy's PT LE on your laptop and head to the beach to do your editing. This way Digidesign can make sure t...

Are you talking about off-axis sensitivity? A figure of 8 mic should have 0% at 90 degrees to the mic's main pick up axis.

Help! Looking for an AES Journal article

Hi, I'm looking for excerpts from Richard E. Werner's article "ON ELECTRICAL LOADING OF MICROPHONES" from the AES Journal, vol.3, no. 5pp. 194-197, 1955. I'm in the middle of writing a linguistic research paper and I'm comparing the variation of register in the language of recording engineers. I'd l...

I guess you're right. I've never had any complaints about how the smallish capsule sounded. Generally my alarm bells start to ring as soon as a manufacturer starts calling a reissue "new and improved". I've tried a couple of tubes that didn't work at all in my MD1. I've had a NOS Valvo 12AT7 in ther...

If you use the search function you will find a couple of tube recommendations for the MD1. I was thinking about replacing the capsule in mine. The capsule in the new MD1B is a proper LDC and the capsule in the old one looks pretty small and cheap. The way the capsule is mounted inside the mic would ...

The RNLA isn't a bad compressor. I use mine occasionally on a smashed drum bus that I blend with uncompressed drums.
Its fast attack and release times can be really handy to add a nice smack to snare drums.
It doesn't see as much use as my 160x does, but in general I'm happy with it.

I never mic both sides. Top only. Yes we did just have a whole thread about this. About you not micing the bottom? I don't mic top and bottom as often as I did before. One or two years ago I would use them on every session. I see it as an option. If want really heavy and big toms and the toms are a...

I consider the U87 to be way overrated. But that's probably just me. It used to be an industry standard years before other more affordable and better microphones were available. It sounds really great on my girlfriend's voice though. If I had to spend 2000$ on something to record vocals, strings, br...

I just waisted some time window shopping on ebay and the Quad8 is still there.
I've seen the API 3124 there as well.

Just a nice option to be aware of - the Focusrite ISA-428. It's not API but hey... I got the 428 mainly because of the optional AD converters to add another 8 inputs to my 002. It's a decent and versatile pre amp and I'm really happy with mine, but if it wouldn't have been for the AD converters I p...

anything i've ever uploaded to myspace has sounded awful. mike Same here. I've uploaded songs at 224kbs and compared the myspaced sounds to the mp3s of the same mixes through windows media player and the difference was like night and day. I've no idea how they compress the mp3s but cymbals generall...

I've never player an Elitist, but the guitarist in my band plays a MIJ Tokai SG and an Orville '59 Les Paul.
They are both amazing guitars and well worth the money he paid for them.

I recorded this emo band that consisted of all kinds of family members. The bass player was the singer's dad and the guitarists were brothers and cousins to the singer. The only guy in the band who wasn't a relative was the keyboarder. The singer also was a drummer but they had a guy who wasn't an o...
