Re: The Bee Gees

I love the build in the drum track on "To Love Somebody" - the way in the first half of a verse, it's straight and restrained, but as it rolls into the second half, the snare and kick get more insistent... pretty brilliant little touch.

Re: Acoustic guitar on a rock song

Most of the basic track on "Street Fightin' Man" came from a heavily distorted mono cassette tape of Keith Richards and Charlie Watts playing directly into cheap microphones ( http://www.timeisonourside.com/SOStreetFighting.html ) - so to mimic it, you might as well do exactly as they did, by overlo...

Re: how do you say UREI?

UREI I always assumed was pronounced as one would say "You're a (insert adjective here)", with a long a sound.

For Oktava, start with "octave" as if said by someone (other than Sean Connery) doing a Russian accent - ohk-tah-vah.

Re: acoustic guitar as swarm of bees

Part of it could very well have to do with the way you're recording it, too. If you're using an onboard pickup, you're just not going to get the sort of overtones and boominess you'll hear by ear (or with certain mics and micing positions) in a room as you flail away at the bass strings.

Re: the greed that is the beatles

According to one article, part of the reason Steve Jobs chose "apple" for the name of his little computer company back in the day was because he's a fan of the Beatles. Sadly, when more than one company exists that uses the same name, a lawsuit is bound to occur. These suits usually are done to prot...

Re: HOW OLD ARE YOU???

I'm 24... 25 in a month. Picked up and taught myself drums at 16, and played in a band until the end of high school. We jointly, amateurly, recorded a 9-song tape using a Fostex 4-track machine (received as apology from a friend of our guitarist's, after he pawned our bass player's microphone... don...

Re: help me make big, fat sounding drums with my limitations

If you liked the sound of the SM57 as a room mic but disliked the overload of your cymbals, you might try "flagging" the cymbals. I'm stealing the terminology from filmmaking, where the idea is that to control where and how much light falls on a target, you put flags (stand-mounted; either cloth on ...

Re: What Digital editing has Done to my Brain...

While the compressor would boost the level of incidental sounds like a singer's between-line breaths, the engineer would still have the option of ducking those sounds out of the final mix.

Re: Stupid question: need pre for tube mic?

The power supply will take care of your phantom power, but you'll likely still want to run it through a preamp for sound level (and since it's already taken care of by the mic's supply, be sure to turn off the preamp's phantom power).

Re: What Digital editing has Done to my Brain...

heh... I hear ya. With digital editing, I really enjoy having the ability to blow away all those little moments or tweak things, but depending on the mood you're going for, you might make the aesthetic/artistic choice to leave some/all of them in. That's likely the choice U2 made - it's a really emo...

Re: Short, simple, and spontaneous

I really like the mood and the texture you've got - the subdued guitar veiled within the reverby ocarina sounds great with the dry vocal. One thing you might try is letting the ocarina decay more fully at the end of the track; it seems to be just a bit too quickly faded away.

Re: Fresh off the presses! Just wrote it yesterday.

Lyrics are the bane of my existence, too, Mike. I can't tell you how many half-written things I've got where lyrically I've stalled out after the first verse and chorus, or have missing lines in an otherwise complete track. I've also been toying with the idea of putting a bunch of guys together. Dec...

Re: Overhead Mics for Recording Drums?

Here's links to a few of my tracks - all use the micing I described (in part because until last week, all I owned was the lone SM-57). - ' Without You ' - ' From Now On ' - aiming for a ~1968 fuzzed-out feel; all electric guitars recorded using a Smokey amp miked from various orientations while insi...

Re: Overhead Mics for Recording Drums?

I'm really low-key about drum tracking (for myself); an SM57 set 6-8 feet back, at ceiling level, aimed between my snare and kick drum. After some compression and EQ, I'm a happy man.

Re: Oktava 219 Manual? Help?

I just picked one up on Friday - haven't played around with it much yet, but here's what I can tell you: BASICS" It's a cardiod-patterned dynamic microphone. The cardiod pattern favors the "front" of the mic - the front side being the one that doesn't have the switches, but does have the (()) logo a...
