The first that comes to my mind is internet video. When bandwidth is low, audio can be collapsed to low bandwidth mono. I think a lot of people still watch mono tv as well.

The accessory connector is mainly for sending signals from the deck to your system. The only inputs are identical to the remote connector (with an additional command for tape lifting), so if you only want to control the transport from your DAW, you're better off using the remote circuit and there, I...

If by saying "crappy" room, you mean you want to minimize the room in your recordings, I would not recommend any omni microphone. Since your ceiling is so low, why don't you try some boundary mics at the ceiling itself?

You can usually find a Urei 7110 for around $200. It varies continuously from RMS to peak. Nice.
