The SPARS code, those AAA/DDD letters, was abandoned years ago because engineers were integrating analog and digital technology during the recording/mixing/mastering stages of making an album to such an extent that determining whether to use an A or a D in any of the three positions was a blurry end...

One of the three Radio Shack stores closest to me has closed down. One of the other two is a clearance location with all inventory marked down an enormous amount.

I got some great recordings earlier this year with the now-discontinued Sony PCM-D50. Very solid, sips batteries, adjustable mics for different stereo configurations. Reco'd.

I also saw it at AES, and they had it rigged up next to an 87 and a 67 with headphones, so you could at least talk into it on the noisy exhibitors' floor and sorta get a feel for it. Based on that limited experience ??it sounds nice. Smoother top end and warmer bottom than the 87. But y'know, again,...
