This won't meet your immediate requirements, but if you end up looking for rehearsal space in SF, definitely check out Lennon Rehearsal. I've used their lockout rehearsal rooms on and off for years, good people to deal with and a real interesting mix of musical styles passing through. Hope this help...

Re subscription services: This has gotta be where things end up -- you pay something extra to your mobile device service every month, and in exchange you can access a big library of songs that can be downloaded to said mobile device. There would have to be some way to keep the files from being copie...

Re used CDs: I buy CDs, new or used, and make mp3s off them. If I sell the CD back to the store, I wipe the mp3s of that album off my computer. The financial problem for the artist is when the mp3 of a song "multiplies" without payment to the artist for each new copy. As Tom Waits said, if you could...

...When you say this, I think of Apple basically profiting off pirate mp3s by selling hardware to listen to them (I-pod). Is that what you're talking about, though? I'm talking about what the personal computer industry called "convergence" which was to create a market for ever newer, more powerful ...

The widespread looting of recordings was the direct result of the actions of huge corporate enablers. Recording artists are being held hostage while Wall Street has successfully lobbied to immunize the "tech industry" from being subject to co-operation with any part of copyright enforcement if it i...

+1 on all of this, unfortunately. However, gotta say it's a relief to hear other people saying this stuff -- I usually feel like I'm shouting in the wilderness when trying to suggest that artists should be paid for their art, or that the overall quality of the art will suffer long-term if no one pay...

These days, pirating audio is just for scumbags with no fucking conscience. Yep. theft is theft. But I defy you to find anyone under 25 who agrees -- including those whose loved ones are musicians. People will find money for beer and cigarettes, then say they can't afford to pay for recorded music....

Re the detuning thing, a digital piano with a honky-tonk preset would work, wouldn't it? Some of 'em have that. Re the rest of it: It depends. If your daughter wants to end up a pianist, it really helps to practice on a piano. The way a real piano responds to different touches and the way the pedal ...

Clarification: Mike Senior's "Mix Rescue" column in SOUND ON SOUND is based on bands sending him mixes of their stuff that the band doesn't like -- they'll often point out specific wishes and complaints about the mix they want repaired in Senior's new mix. At this point, Senior goes ahead, using eve...

So this guy, as a mixer, might come back to the artist and say 'Your guitar tone sucked, so I redid the part on my Motif keyboard?' just letting my imagination roam, but that doesn't sound good...? More like, "Your guitar tone sucked, so I doubled it with my Motif keyboard. Your timing sucked too, ...

Just got that book as well. If you like that, you will probably also find his SOUND ON SOUND column interesting, where he does a mix every month of a song that's been submitted to him. He's definitely one of those "Everything is permitted" kind of mixers -- changes the timing of notes, replays parts...

Re the original topic: I think I understand the sentiment. And to be honest, I've ended up mostly going back in time (wow, Son House! wow, John Fahey! wow, Vangelis's Bladerunner soundtrack) or across cultural boundaries (wow, Sundanese music! wow, Afro-Brazilian music!) for new thrills. But you've ...

No one used 1/4" 4 track for any professional recordings during the '70's. Lee Perry? :D Yes. Although he was bouncing down to another 1/4" deck, didn't do it all inside the 3340. (He also did some 8 track stuff--you can see the 8 track reel to reel in video footage from Black Ark in the 70s.) Bear...
