Here's a few inexpensive mics I've had good results with on drums. One criteria of a drum mic is that it should stand up to high spl's without distorting. AT Pro39 - SDC that works good for toms, snare, and overheads. Captures the attack very well. Not as good on floor toms as MXL 2001 (see below). ...

I record at levels where my preamps hit about 0 on the loudest belts. This makes the quiet passages pretty far down in volume. I use compression but usually I don't want to slam the vocal so I manipulate the volume envelope of the vocal during mixing to bring everything to an acceptable level. I tel...

I've often wondered what would happen in those types of scams if they did send you the money and you just kept all of it. No, the point of the scam is that you never really get the money in the first place. They will typically send a bogus cashier's check and ask you to send part of it back immedia...

I'm not sure why anyone would think that doing something I enjoy with my time and money somehow equates to a lack of self-respect. Maybe I should have been more specific about my reasons, but frankly, I don't feel the need to defend my actions any further. I got a lot out of it, and it was a very v...

I've discovered a lot of good music through these kinds of threads. There's at least 15 or 20 albums that I'll need to check out from this one. "Masterpiece Albums" is a good way to put it. I'll break mine down into two categories; Well Known and Off The Beaten Path. I'm going to try to not include ...

I also charge a flat rate per song and it works well for me. Fortunately I don't have airplanes or buses to worry about but other than that my situation is similar to yours. The band knows what it will cost going in and it gives me some creative control regarding how much time to put into the projec...

I'm not going to quote all of 8th_note's stuff here, but I have recorded for free, and never experienced any of that. I should clarify that I'm not criticizing the practice of occassionally recording for free - I've done it myself. I've also recorded for barter. My post was directed at the idea of ...

Good god, is this thread back on the first page? Why then, would anybody have a problem with me continuing to record people for free, as a hobby? I would just think less of you as a human being. But seriously, my problem with somebody consistently doing recording for free is that they apparently asc...

You got me wondering about this too. Here's a couple of questions, theories and things to try: Is the RIAA curve put onto the master tape when mastered for vinyl or does it run through an RIAA eq at the pressing plant on it's way to the cutting head? I thought this step happened at the vinyl plant b...

Does your wife or girlfriend (both?) wear makeup? Do you pick up the house before company comes over? Do you wax your car and touch up the dings before you sell it? Do great authors submit their manuscripts to editors before publishing? Does Shania Twain use Autotune on stage? We're all constantly s...

hello, i have been looking at options for an inexpensive but powerful entry into the world of digital recording. Is there a reason you need to use ProTools? If not, there are a lot better options than a Digi 001. You could use a modest PC, say an Athlon 1.6 ghz, along with an M-Audio Delta 66 sound...

We have bands stay at our house occassionally when they play in town. Let me tell you about the last two. One of the bands has Guitar Hero in their van. They have an inverter, a small TV and a PS2 with Guitar Hero and they are fanatics. They brought the player and controllers in the house, hooked it...

That's why I like doing my own mastering. I know it isn't politically correct but I use Ozone and it gives me the conrol of doing just enough to bring the volume to an acceptable level and still preserve the dynamics of the projects I record. But then, I'm not recording Green Day or Jimmy Eats World.
