Well that's kinda interesting. Funny thing is, that particular setup is one that jumped out at me as being a cool idea to try.

Oh yeah...almost forgot about powering it. I suppose you could use an outboard phantom power unit, but I'm not thinking it would be worth troubling with the investment. Then again...I might stick that SM82 in front of an acoustic guitar and discover a sound that makes grown men weep. Then again...ma...

Some great responses and ideas here. Looking forward to more... My default has pretty much been the 'recorderman' method as it is known. I should experiment more but, even if there's better set-ups, this always sounds good (often great) and is the 'low risk' quick 'n' easy method. I have tried diffe...

Wow, that is pretty weird. I might have to go haggle with the shop and see what I can get them for. So, considering it puts out line level, I just plug them right into the A/D converter? Or into a compressor while tracking for extra whack sound maybe?

Very interesting...

Post y'r overhead placement techniques!

The one aspect of recording that I continually ponder and debate upon is the placement of drum overheads as I tend to like a slightly minimal micing technique. Sometimes out of necessity actually, but this aside, given that the OH mics do represent the meat of the sound, it's something I'm always th...

Thanks for the input guys...much appreciated. Gives me a little food for thought. Been gravitating towards the tube version, but I think the other pre I will be purchasing to round out the studio will be a Davisound and it seems the JFet in this case might be the best decision to match up. Probably ...

You might want to check out a site that caters to audio/home theatre folks. I know that Sanus makes a couple of 22" stands and I'm pretty sure that there's a few other manufacturers offering similar products. There's a company called Studio Tech, based out of Germany I think, that make very nice pro...

Anyone use/own BOTH the Hamptone JFet+Tube pres?

OK...it seems, with the support on this forum that this would be an overly covered topic in which the 'use the search function' mantra would need to be repeated. In light of the fact that, after a fair amount of research on various forums (including this one) I haven't really encountered much on thi...

I don't have much to comment on the pros and cons of a drum set up like this, but I gotta say that the mere fact you're able to actually say this in a TapeOp post absolutely rules :D

Shure SM82 ?

I was in a local pawn shop and they had a couple of these odd looking mics in their inventory. I could probably get them relatively cheaply and was wondering if anyone's got some insight on these things. Initial research online reveals little discussion, but enough info to determine that it's got a ...

This Heat put out some great music. I'll have to confess that I didn't fully warm up to them until I heard their live BBC sessions CD, which is truly excellent and put a new spin on their music (for me anyway). Check that one out if you haven't already.

I noted the discussion points regarding the potential downside of passing throught the pre and a/d circuitry of the Roland. I am actually in a similar situation where I'm using a Korg D32XD recorder with outboard pre-amps. I did JUST pick up an A/D converter and have hit some technical difficulties ...

Conny Plank's studio...anyone know anything?

Krautrock-fanboy fascination compels me to ask the question. I'd love to know something about the engineer, his studio and methods. The records he was involved in all had that magical 'glow' to them.

Any and all insights and/or info is much appreciated!

I listened to your tracks on MySpace...nice stuff. My thought, considering your vocals are such a pivotal point in the music, is that if you're considering a microphone at this point you should seek out a nice microphone that compliments your vocal sound and style. A good LDC perhaps? That aside, I'...
