OK, I finally got around to opening up one of the V8s. The gain pot doesn't appear to be loose, but the circuit board is attached to the aluminum back panel with screws at a right angle, and the ICs are bolted to the panel to act as a heat sink I think. I couldn't find anything that seemed broken or...

What options are there for good mix-bus plug-ins that allow side chain input and/or filtering in Pro Tools?

I used EQ3 on drum and guitar busses (submasters), but never on the main mix bus. It has those nice features that you mention (e.g., sometimes I wanted to duck a wall of guitars under something), it just doesn't sound quite good enough, IMHO, to be all over the mix. It has HPF, LPF, and side chain input, none of which are available (AFAIK) with the UAD-2 plug-ins, and has a wide range of attack and release times.

I wonder how diffficult it would be to replace the gain pot with a stepped or detented control? the difficulty of matching levels of the two sided has always bugged me.

I am experimenting with using the UAD2 1176 and LA2A emulations on the stereo bus. Is this crazy talk? I am tending toward the LA2A for the folky ballads and the 1176 for the punchy up tempo tunes. Does anyone have experience with dbx 160 compressors imparting a non-level-dependent subtle distortion on signals even when not going into appreciable gain reduction? The Sparkle Drive Tremolo is great for the Fender type Vibrato [sic]. It actually uses an opto-isolator circuit like BF Fender amps. It has a wide range of adjustment, especially the newer 4-knob version.
