are corks useful for anything?
I have saved many wine corks over the years and am wondering if I can do anything useful with them in my studio. I do not believe they have enough mass to make a difference in sound control, but I dunno, what do you all think? Could I put them in frames as panels for diffusion? Any ideas? I'm gonna ...

Since you have already stated that you plan on re-tracking the guitar and bass, I would use the pre amp on the drums. Everything else can be punched and re-tracked, but it is hard to fix a drum sound on a live recording. You can mess with guitar and bass sounds after the fact until you get what you ...

i wonder if this could be taken a step further and extend the wires a few feet (with good quality shielded cable) so the base can be on the floor, and the capsule part could be positioned snugly next to the snare drum....... -chris I would be concerned about altering the signal impedance or quality...

recording with GK 400 bass head
I am recording a band next week and the bass player wants that Jesus Lizard-style GK bass sound. I am going to take the DI off his head. Question is, can I run this bass head without it pluggged into a speaker? I know with tube amps you can damager the tubes doing this, but what about with solid sta...

It could be a resistor dying, have you pulled the box apart and looked at the crossover and wiring? Also, maybe trade tweeters with the other monitor and see if the noise is inherent to the monitor or the speaker itself. I am sure you have already tried switching the speakers and the cables going to...

I bought new, high quality monitor speakers. HUGE difference. Also, I changed the carpet that had been soaking drummer sweat/spit/beer for years now. The funny smell went away with it! Oh yeah, I took all my broke mic stands and used the parts to make new mic stands, then threw the broken shit away....

Recording outside?
I have a beautiful screened in patio relatively close to my studio. I have an upcoming project that will be space consuming and I was considering either recording a drum set outside or possibly setting up my tracking/mixing station out there. The patio is about 20'x20', peaked roof, fully screened o...

After running back and forth to the music store for endless cables, making wrong purchases, and losing too many adaptors I finally gave in and bought one of the most valuable and money saving tools in the studio world: a soldering iron! After having a friend show me the ins and outs (no pun intended...

Should I be compressing mics while tracking?
I would like to know how you do your tracking. Common sense seems to say I should go from the mic to the pre amp to the compressor to the tape. Is this the best way to approach things like vocals and drums, or can I just as easily add compression during the mixing? I have had experiences where I wen...
