Mult the guitar to another channel and use a gate/expander to eliminate every attack to the greatest extent possible. Think loooong attack. This might not work depending on whether or not you compressed to tape and how much. Use extreme settings. Once you feel like most of what's coming through is o...

SM57. Totally. I like it in particular for male singers who are deep but also sibilant, though a pop filter is a must. I finished tracking an EP about a month back where I think every single lead vocal was an SM57, although the singer was quite loud and was singing and playing piano at the same time...

Lately I find myself almost always using a close and room mic for vocals. It adds a nice (and variable) amount of room ambience, but can be especially awesome for really dynamic or shouty singers. With dynamic performances I sometimes like to compress the close mic a good deal and the room mic very ...

Hey! Thanks for the information, everyone who replied with information and advice. Slack time is unavoidable if side A is shorter than side B, obviously, but I think it'd be nice to trim the excess if the reverse is true. We'll see. I guess I'd better hit up the thrift store for some old cassettes a...

Sure, but how far do you want to take that train? Ideally every copy sold would be identical to the 1/4" master, but the creation of anything boils down to a series of compromises. Think for a moment about what you're really saying: "I'm glad you like my music, but I'm afraid you're enjoying it wron...

I don't own that record (or any of his others) so I can't comment as far as the specific sound on the record, but when I've done this there were a couple of things I remember making it work. The electric bass was mostly bottom but with a good deal of bite from the pick, and the acoustic bass had a l...

Yeah. Talking about doing it the same way as you, one at a time. http://messageboard.tapeop.com/viewtopic.php?t=69789 It doesn't matter whether someone else is doing it or you're doing it, it still makes no sense to record your material onto cassette and then make another cassette from that (if I un...

A couple of things. I've been getting ready to do a couple cassette runs; there's a thread I started a little further down the page where people threw in some good info. I'm a little confused by your post; are you printing the cassettes yourself, or are you talking about making a master for another ...

Right. I love fancy packaging, and often do see it as an extension of the music or sound on the record. I love records that come with books or interesting artwork- it's not the same as designing packaging for a brazilian wax kit or something, it's not about increasing marketability for marketability...

Don't worry! There are already CDs, and anything still-to-be-released that will be going out on cassettes will also be going out on CDs. We'll be pulling some long nights at No Coast, a local collective (www.no-coast.org- stop by if you're ever in Chicago, they've also got a rad consignment shop sto...

Totally. That's definitely true, and probably nobody would really care, but I try to never let myself get comfortable with the phrase "well, it's good enough..." In some circles it seems like carefully making something that will be a 'product,' doing everything you can to make it good and working ha...

Drumsound and dsw, that's good advice... I've done some looking and there are a number of suppliers who make tapes in 5 or 15 minute length increments. Still, there's going to be a little extra at the end, and I'm very much into the idea of making any release to the highest standard of quality I'm a...

Yeah, people are indisputably buying them, at least in these parts, and people keep telling us we should make them... like I said, I don't use them and I don't think they sound that great, but if people are going to buy and enjoy them I can't think of any reason why that's a bad thing. I guess I'll ...

So, I've recently decided that it might be a good idea to put out a number of releases on cassette. I'd like to sidestep the discussion about whether the format is still viable or worthwhile sonically- I don't think they sound all that great, although they can certainly sound alright when well done ...

Tracking a rhythm guitar overdub during a session a coupla years back, the guitarist was having trouble coming in on time because the count-in was so quiet. My solution was to switch the track where the count-in was clearest- which happened to be the heart mic on the kit- to PFL in my phones, crank ...
