Least favorite connectors

My selections in order of loathsomeness, 1. Molex - I've tried repairing faulty ones. Stretching the pins, even adding solder to the posts, not understanding why the hell it just won't work. Ended up just soldering wires to the posts. Problem solved. Since these are generally internal they take a la...

FT 1 reel of RMG SM468 1/2" for 1 reel of SM911 1/2&quo

Hey folks, I bought a reel of SM468 to try out for my Tascam machine. I think I like SM911 better. This reel is almost new with absolutely no sign of shedding. Not even the normal residual light dusting when you first shuttle a new reel of tape. I recorded about 3 passes at the beginning of the tape...

WTB Quantegy 456 1/2" tape

Hey folks, I want to buy a few reels of 456, 1/2" Not looking for Ampex era, so nothing before 1995, and preferably nothing after the first time Quantegy shut it's doors. If anybody has some sitting around, let me know what you have (NOS! yes!) or very lightly used, and hopefully some info about it'...

Also, last I checked the only place to get the right belts for Nak's is at Mars Communications, and that is a major pain in the ass. Yes, he has the belt for you and he's real proud of mentioning how many he's sold last month, but you won't get one in less than a month, if at all. I had a ridiculous...

The best thing about cassettes is you can turn them the fuck UP without hurting your ears. Different story with digital. The optimal listening level seems to be a lot lower.

Hmmm. Well, try unplugging and plugging back in some of the molex connectors that are assocaiated with those areas (I doubt that's it though) Hopefully it's not some little component on a board that you'll have to troubleshoot. If you have an ohm meter, see how far you can trace the path for continu...

Hey, First, this is just routine, but I'm surprised it's even playing/recording unless someone at some point replaced the rubber. These guys almost always need new capstan and control belts, idler tires, and pinch roller. I think these are all still available from teac parts. Look them up. Give them...

Lamenting the unavailability of 456

Oh 456, how I wish someone would bring you back. (The quantegy version that is, after the sticky shed issue was solved) I have quite a few reels that are of the quantegy era that exhibit no indication that they will be shedding any time soon. Even when brutalized on my Ampex transport. And they satu...

Just reporting back with some success (I think) Just gave the first 4 channel version a quick test through the mono program buss. Sounds a lot better. Thanks so much Scum. Only question I have left (hope it's not too much to ask) is how much to increase a couple caps in the master strip. Here's the ...

I got some free tickets to see Wavy Gravy's 70th birthday extravaganza in Berkley w/ all kinds of people on the bill (including Gillan Welch and David Rawlings. Great ) I was really impressed with David Lindley. It was early on and all the Ratdog fans were yet to arrive, and people weren't really pa...

If you find somebody, let me know. I have (maybe) a similar issue that I can't figure out. My capstan (MX5050 BII) works intermittently. I recapped the capstan board, even changed out the relay. Seems like it works better when standing up than laying on it's back, but I don't know. it's been bumming...
