Granddad's old wire recorder
So I've been recruited (not that I resisted) to archive my late grandfather's old wire recordings and entrusted with his old Webster Chicago Model 181 wire recorder. Thought all you TOMB folks might find it fun to see the thing and hear a bit about the process. Here is the beast: http://i323.photobu...

From the product description: "The PRE-73 is perfect for almost any signal source , no matter if it's a microphone with a high or low sensitivity (like a passive ribbon mic), a synthesizer or sound module or an elec...

Wilco (the loft)
http://wilcoworld.net/loft/gigapan.php It doesn't pan any wider than the initial view, or rotate, but you can zoom far enough to read titles off some of the CDs on the shelf (NRBQ, Weakerthans, Count Basie, like 15 copies of the Minus 5 "Down with Wilco" on vinyl), the model of the console, etc. Ki...

my understanding, from the Pro Tools and M-Audio documentation, is that there is no way to get 16 inputs from Delta 1010s into M-Powered ProTools. The only way to get 16 I/O is to use one of the newer M-Audio interfaces that has 8 analog and multiple digital I/O. sorry! but you can use M-Powered Pro...

i think part of why you have an intern (in ANY field) is to have someone to do the little stuff (buying coffee, mowing grass, cleaning patchbay cable plugs, etc) so that you can get your work done. in exchange, the intern is allowed to observe industry pros and how they do their jobs. in recording t...

drum machines don't have to sound bad. the MGMT stuff sounds like drum machines and sampled beats to me. the trick is learning how to program and process the drum machines or sampled beats in an interesting way. loading samples of beats you like into garage band and checking out where the beats fall...

it sounds like the teacher needs to phrase his assignments better... i do think that for most of us, it is best to learn the "rules" and the "correct ways" to do things first, and then learn how to break those rules and how to do things incorrectly. you can come up with some really cool stuff just t...

Assuming that the phase "problems" are in fact caused by a difference in time between when the signal from one source hits one mic and when it hits one or more other mics, nudging the tracks to where they are perfectly lined up in time will correct the phase issues, period. All frequencies should b...

Plug your dimensions into this: http://www.bobgolds.com/Mode/RoomModes.htm Tons of info about your theoretical room. It seems like your dimensions work out pretty well according to his calculator, but I'm not even close to an expert. It looks like you'll need some bass trapping (no surprise) and the...
