A Question on older gear
I was just wondering why on some old school gear (such as older altec mic pres) often times you see the input transformers on the outside of the the unit? Is there any reason behind this, or just a design statement of the times? Thanks in advance.

Re: Death Cab
Really both, but I love the sound of their guitars on the albums, they just sound so perfect. Any information you got would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Death Cab
I really dig the album also as well as all of their previous releases. I have been poking around on the internet all afternoon unable to find any details as to the equipment they use. As far as I can tell they employ strats and telecasters and some pics I found had fender amps while other times they...

Home Studio or Pro
Please excuse the long post: I was wondering, this is slightly hypothetical although is quite forceable in the future, if I had say $20,000 to spend on making an album say from an advance from a record company would it be advantagous to take that cash and go into a nice studio for a week or so or wo...

Yoshimi, Kid A, Sophmore Slump etc...
I'm pretty new to recording but I've recently aquired a few pieces of gear and would like to start putting a few things on tape. I really love the Flaming Lips, Grandaddy and Radiohead amongst others and was wondering how they go about making those amazing, elaborate records filled with interesting ...

Yeah, thats why they call me the new guy
Just curious, I've been reading through some of the posts and noticed that alot of people don't have very positive things to say about the DBX 266 Compressor. Now I know its a cheap-o comp but for its price why is it so bad? Would I be better off selling mine and aquiring an RNC or something along t...

Midi Patchbay
I got a couple of synths, a drum machine, an external sequencer and a midi controller as well as a midi in on my soundcard. Hence I was wondering if somebody can recommend a good midi patchbay or some method of hooking up all this stuff so I don't have to constantly plug and unplug everything. I've ...

Making Cables
I've just begun to make some cables (1/4 unbalanced and balanced) to wire up my rack and some of my guitar stuff. I was curious, does it really matter that much if I use heat shrink tubing or is it perfectly exceptable to just run the cable into the connector?

Cubase to Pro Tools
I was wondering, I use cubase 5.1 at home to record. Would it be possible to bring my tracks into a studio that has only pro tools and how would I go about doing this (without mixing down to a wav. and burning it to CD).

Re: Mic/Eq Modules
Thanks Jeremy that really cleared up a lot of confusion for me. The one remaining question I have is, how difficult is it to make a microphone preamp (not that I'm going to attempt to build one anytime in the near future). Thanks again.

Mic/Eq Modules
I know this is a really newbie question but can somebody explain what these mic and eq modules are, how are they different from regular outboard mic pres and rack mounted eq units and how does one go about installing them in a rack and using them. Also I was just curious, what exactly makes certain ...

SAW
I was browsing the web and I came across SAW. It seemed really good and with a $2500 price tag I'm suprised I hadn't heard more about it. Has anybody here used it or has any information/comments to add.
