Howe Gelb still uses his Fostex 4-track cassette machine, saying "It's weaknesses then are it's strengths now." He played me some really nice stuff recorded very recently on that machine. That is a zen Koan for this whole discussion, thanks man. I'll ruminate on it. And the 388 sounds like a cool w...

My advice is to just chill, drink a beer, go on an a tuesday or wed, say good job to the band between sets, talk to the hot waitress (or old cigarette-stained waitress depending), say your looking to play, check out Brown's Diner, lower Broad... What kind of stuff are you looking to play? Oh, and go...

Alright, I'm done with Cassette

I've been looking at upgrading my Tascam 488 MKII for awhile, and now the XLR input crapped out, and this kinda seals it. I'm done. I've been looking at Akai dps, Roland VS, or I might even consider staying with cassette if there's an upgrade from the 488 that I don't know of, I enjoy the portabilit...

I came down here for school and I'm constantly lamenting that I have to study/ don't have money. I'll finally see Mark Lanegan tomorrow night with the Twilight Singers (Greg Dulli) at the Mercy Lounge, saw Bonnie Prince Billy there last year; so good bands do come through on a regular basis. There a...

Books/ Writing about music

Hey guys, a Professor asked me if I have any suggestions for a course called Music in Writing or something to that effect. She mentioned Nick Hornsby, the Dylan Biography, and one about the roots of country music. All I could think of was some Alan Lomax stuff, Land Where Blues Began, Woody Guthrie:...

I'll see the Black Keys, Neil Young, & David Rawlings.

Raise you Sparklehorse (mark linkous), Howe Gelb, Calexico (Burns Convertino), Nic Jones... Richard Buckner would be a Goddamn fascinating interview (songcraft, mystery locale recording) Speaking of RB, JD Foster would be cool too.

Preamp rookie question

What will it do for my recordings (analog 8-track cassette)? Why do I need one? What is a decent budget model, should I go new or vintage tube style?

Thanks fellas.

Great call on the Gene Vincent, man I definitely gave a 'what the hell?!?!' vocal and solo are crazy. Badass stuff, a lil like Charlie Feathers ... obscure rockabilly, well, there's something to be said for that.

Man, I haven't heard them in a few years, but this album sounds really cool. FYI check out footage on IFC's Henry Rollins show, two songs and interview, good high energy stuff.

Ideally I'd like something that is less boomy, more gravelly/ throaty, maybe more like Cash or earlier L. Cohen, how you can tell they have a commanding deep voice, but it doesn't sound too big, maybe they did that in the mix, who knows? Thanks fellas.

Deep Voice MIC

I'm looking for a mic to use on my deep to mid singing voice. Right now I'm recording to Tascam Cassette. Price range is less than 500, but ideally something cheaper, more bang for the buck, or even vintage. How would I get a sound LIKE Tom Waits, Fred Neil, Mark Lanegan, Jim Morrison, etc. without ...
