Re: New Barn Studio build out

Thats an awesome place. I wouldn't do a thing ! ! .. ever hear the album "Harvest" ? Thank you, but I'm not sure Harvest was done in February in New England. I might want to insulate the walls a bit. Ha! That's probably going to be the biggest job - insulating and putting in an air gap, insulating ...

Re: RANT: "in your spare time.."

If I hear one more client ask for me to do something in my "spare time" I am going to throw an Alesis 3630 through a window. I believe "in your spare time" is code for "also for free" as well. The majority of my clients over the years have bee very respectful of the work I do and the time I put int...

Re: Isolating Vocals when Recording with DI Electric Guitar

Yes .. a barrier, almost anything between you mic and guitar below, its awkward at first not seeing your pickin' hand, but should get the job done.

Re: Should it stay or should it go?

If you're in a DAW w/plugins, I don't see the point. As for mic and pre, that might be a different story.

Re: Cymbals/How far to go

It sounds like you only really need good hihats for now. If I'm understanding correctly. Personally, it's hard to really know how I'm going to like cymbals unless I'm there in person. I only really use hand hammered cymbals so more "production" cymbals may be more consistent and easier to just orde...

Re: Recording Trends/Techniques that drive you nuts

I really hate the modern trend of the super bright condensers on drum overheads and the drums mixed like your head is stationed next to the cymbals (overheads running hot). i don't want to hear that. listen to a james brown record, hear how the drums don't have a ton of super high end content yet a...

Re: Cymbals/How far to go

Re: 16 more channels of analog compression

An alternative to 16 channels of compression is to have one great stereo compressor/limiter for mix-down. :)

Re: Tweed amps

Back in '60s and 70s they couldn't give tweed amps away ..piled in corner of stores w/super low price tags. Those that couldn't afford a new amp painted their tweed black. I was there, it was weird.

Re: the olden days before triggering...

Before I yell at you all to get off my lawn, I was just remembering the days when I wanted to get more "click" out of a rock kick drum. I'm sure many people did similar things.... I would gaff tape a penny to the beater head right where the beater would hit, and stick a thumb tack in the felt of th...

Mastering gear, a personal concoction that includes custom and modded. And mostly just listening, not much knob twisting.
