ter which could apply to a band. Young being the key adjective. After college or so, pick a major metro area to live in that has a huge music scene within a one day drive. You could live in the Philly area and play New York, Boston etc. Live there for 2 or3 years until you know the town inside out ...

A lot of these responses are missing the essence of the question I think. It's not 'why do we compress vocals?'; it's 'why do we compress them on the way in, when we could easily put off that step until mixing?' I use a hardware compressor lightly on the way into the machine because I'm going to end...

I have the smaller zoom equivalent (H2) but I haven't used it much since I got an iPhone which makes almost (for my purposes) the same quality of field recording without the hassles of keeping AA batteries charged and using USB to transfer recordings to the computer etc. For at-home simpler recordin...

I also found out by listening, and confirmed online, that they actually overdubbed some guitar, percussion and vocal parts, which, I guess, is why they call it a re-issue and not a remaster. Wow. To what extent?? I know Jagger did new vocals for the outtakes with Don Was manning the board. Other th...

I think this is one of those things where you can only say: It depends. Some endeavors work well as one-person vertically integrated projects from start to finish. Like Ansel Adams photos, or paintings, etc. Others work better with various specialists coming and going throughout the project. It depe...

Then I (and a few others) chime in and say: Reaper is pretty much all you're ever going to need unless you are recording other people for a living.

These threads are always the same. Just a few categories of reply: "I use [program x] and now that I know most of the key commands and whatnot I don't plan to switch. You should also give [program x] a try" Or: "I used to use [program x] but there were two things about it that I didn't like so now I...

I use mine on bass cabinets from time to time. It works well when things are thumpy and more clarity is needed.

In other words, when you want to listen to a file and it goes straight to quicktime in a new tab/window, that's your browser automatically doing that with the file because the file is sitting there as a plain old .mp3 file. The myspace embeds files in its weird player gadget, which is what you are t...

I'd rather pay 'em to archive tweets than pay 'em to keep sending young folks over to Afghanistan

Why is this thread here again? It doesn't seem relevant to anything recording-like.

Jeff, how about you stop paying your taxes. Problem solved. Easy peasy.

Go with Logic if you like tons of nice plugins, really nice instruments, and most of your editing is punch-ins. If you are a creative editor, Logic is a nightmare. if you want to push things around, cut out a chorus, drop a chorus in somewhere, Logic is the worst editor that has ever been made. Per...

I jumped from Tracktion to Reaper about 1.5 years ago and never looked back. I never send entire sessions to others for collaboration, so I don't mind if Reaper has less market share than Logic or Pro Tools or whatever. My experience with Reaper has been this: I fire it up when I want to record, thi...
