well, i made the kick sound pretty alright with the tracks i had so i dont think it was a bad choice for me to save the track and not rerecord it. but i DO agree sometimes you have to ditch a take and redo it. this was the third time we tried this tune - we got some really good performances down on ...

i got some alright definition in the end. most of the problem was boomy bass. i sacrificed a little bit of the boomy tone that i like (ah, the difference between liking a sound and liking it in the mix[/]) to get the kick to stick out by cutting 120hz and boosting 200hz a bit. worked like a charm in...

http://www.recordingeq.com/EQ/req0400/OctaveEQ.htm that website might be a good resource to acquaint you with the basics of EQ i think, though, most people will tell you just to experiment with EQ and hear what happens, because experience is more important than any how-to. i do think the above guide...

my only amp, and pretty much the only amp i ever need, is an ampeg jet. mine is from 58 or 59, i believe. i picked it up years ago for $250, put another $150 into it, and it sounds GREAT. 12 watts, 1x12" combo, 3 knobs - volume, tone, trem. the volume at like 2-3 is a very usable clean with just a b...

This may have been mentioned already, but you might want to try some steep high-pass filtering on the guitar and bass tracks. Cut away as much of that extra low end out as you possibly can without destroying your guitar/bass sounds. [<|>] hmm, already got the guitars high passed around 120hz where ...

What happens when you just turn the kick up? Or, better yet, turn everything else, bass especially, down? since i started this thread, i did this. turned all my busses down to 0, and brought them all up slowly and the mix is a bit more even now. but what REALLY has acheived any results is: first i ...

thank you for reminding me! i was looking to pick up one of those soon!!! i suspect it will make a nice drum overhead.red cross wrote:Do yourself a favour and get an Electrovoice 635a. Omni dynamic with a really smooth sounding midrange, if a little shelved on the top and bottom. It's a mic you'll never outgrow.

maybe you could pinpoint which attack frequency pushes the most on the kick. it might not be the best sounding frequency when the kick is soloed, but it might work in the mix. push that on the kick, then cut a little bit of that frequency in the competing tracks (probably guitars). you can also try...

thanks for the suggestions on how to avoid this next time! i do appreciate them, and they will help me out next time for sure. although, right now i sorta have to focus on this track to get it done and then move on to doing another song. so i do have a couple, while sub-par, usable kick tracks that ...

so, the kick sounded good in the room? did you put up some room mics? turn those up. well, i had one mono overhead, and it was REALLY overhead (like, right over the cymbals/toms, so it didnt pick up too much of the kick. more of the resonance and not the thump. what i meant by "kick sounds fine in ...

also, ive heard that bussing the kick and the bass and compressing them together (or maybe sidechaining them or something?) can get the kick to stick out a little more - anyone know how that is done and am i looking at using more bass-like comp settings (longer release/attack) or more kick like comp...
