True true true. All things considered, I would vote Union Pool on a weekday evening or a Sunday. On a weekend its TOO damn crowded, but weekday could be just right. We could almost definitely snag a table inside or out. iona is kind of small. Never been to subway bar. There is also Enids, Pencil Fac...

without a doubt - #1) Ween 1997 at the Roxy in Boston. For one brief moment, Satan himself was no longer the living incarnation of pure evil - it was Ween. #2) Radiohead at the Hammerstein Ballroom (NY) on the OK Computer tour. We waited on line 3 hours to be upfront and it was well worth it. #3) El...

I completely agree with this. Dandies suck on they highest levels of suck. what a bunch of clueless hacks. I could go on and on and on about how all their collective artistic failures add up to the Perfect Storm of Suckitude. Haven't seen the film in months, but here are a few things i remember: The...

There is really only one option here - Get a big bottle of red wine (Cabernet will work) Turn your inhibitions down by about 12 db. Pipe Serge Gainsburg in through your kickass monitors. Allow one thing to lead to another. Record it, then overdub it onto the bridge of the song a la "Rocket Queen" by...

Re: record contract
it completely depends on about a million factors. Is it a big indie or a small indie? I have released music on indie labels and worked for them, so i can pretty much give you a look at both sides of the equation. Here are some considerations - 1: TALK to other bands on the label! What kind of feedba...

I'll see your "Us and Them" and "Rosalita" and raise you one "Walk on the Wild Side" But yeah, aside from those, the rock n roll sax solo is usually a terrible idea. Truth be told, a saxophone solo actually played a part in the death of rock and roll. You see, my friends, i have calculated the very ...

If the label paid to have it recorded, its their record, and so unfortunately they do have a say in how it comes out. I have no great respect for the musical opinions of 'industry' types, but in this instance, i actually think they have a point. in the first Clip you posted, the room / ambient mics ...

Interesting that a bunch of people have listed Elliott Smith Figure 8 - it does sound really beautiful but i vastly prefer the recording on his first 3 before he went hifi - Especially with his vocals, the paper thin ghostly quality of the voice on something like The Biggest Lie is just devastating....

I personally like a snare that sounds like ripping two pieces of velcro apart (SHSHCHCHTTTT!) as opposed to one that has any kind of pitch (i hate a Ska snare that goes DOIK!) Here is what i usually do - I have never had luck micing the bottom of the snare. I put 57 on top of snare. But the POSITION...

Holy shit - you're right, and My Teenage Stride rocks! I am totally coming to check you guys out next New York show. I would love to know how you recorded reversal of a red bird - you got a perfect but not selfconsciously 80's sound, just brilliant. And that song....oh yeah, totally hit the spit. bu...

Quick (and possibly stupid) question - If you are routing everything out of the 002 and through an analog board, what are you mixing ONTO - back into protools as a stereo track? What then, bounce to disk? That seems like it would make sense but i am really getting fed up with the loss in quality fro...

altiverb help?
You know, i got altiverb 4 last year and have really struggled with it for some reason. i use it primarily on vocals, a little on guitars, going for a kind of 80's Smiths / Cure sound. Occasionally i go for a Beach Boys kind of sound. Can someone recommend a setting for airy female vocals and Johnny...
