If your internship involves not learning anything, but instead cutting grass for no money, might as well work for a landscaper and get $12 an hour for cutting grass. Pardon me, but I don't know where studio guys get off with that sort of attitude. I've seen this philosophy presented a few times, an...

+2 to Brian. Even the non-audio related experience of working as an intern/runner is incredibly valuable- vital, in fact- for those who want to work in a commercial facility or at a "commercial" level. During that time you are gaining valuable experience in the ins and outs of a *working* studio. If...

or you could just cut out the middle man, start a lawn mowing business & use the profits to build up your own recording environment. ...and spend the rest of your life recording indie bands in your garage for 12 bucks an hour. NTTAWWT. But if you want exposure to, say, film mixing, or pop (whether ...

If you have 10 years experience and want to stay working in audio, you don't need to be cutting grass anywhere. But what does "10 years experience" mean to me if I have never heard of him or his work? EXACTLY. Everyone in LA has experience. Every person knocking on the door recorded a bunch of band...

Doing non-audio related work as an intern (or paid runner, more preferably) is par for the course, especially in "big" markets like L.A. and New York. A working commercial facility can't just hire any old janitor because a janitor can't be trusted to help move and calibrate the ProTools rig, invento...

this is the one I have. http://www.costco.com/Browse/Productgroup.aspx?Prodid=11223804&whse=BC&topnav=national&browse=&lang=en-US Awesome, thanks. That's exactly the one I was looking at at sit4less.com. I might head over to costco later and see if there's one I can try out (though I'll probably bu...

I actually have a knockoff - I think it's made by OfficeStar and you can get them at Costco for <$200. Is the seating part made out of the meshy stuff too, or is it a foam seat? That was a problem I had a few years ago when I was looking for an inexpensive HM alternative. I tried a few things out, ...

I think it's a marketing decision - HD is their cash-cow. why would they let the low-end LE crowd eat away at those big profit margins? instead they want each and everyone of us to outgrow LE (by that I mean get fed up with it...) and put all of our money into an HD upgrade. I see this theory all o...

i thought the waveforms drawings looked different, but haven't tried to a/b so i could be crazy. You're not crazy; PT 8 draws the waveforms with more detail and with a couple different (very minor) options. I didn't know there were cs updates. You'd think they'd roll that into the latest version wh...

Thanks for posting this, Dave. This looks like an awesome event with an incredible guest list (not to mention the prizes!). In the 80's ever studio that had mostly quit doing music and mostly doing midi stuff that you'd go into here in ny the guy would pull out his 414. I know they are useful but they became "jingle mics" to me. Thing about the 414 is, there are so many different versions of them, and they are all *comp...

I use MIDI the way god intended. Largely as a beatclock and 1-3 streams of note data. Mostly my sequencing is on internal sequencers, so I bypass MIDI except for making the machines work together. I usually do controller changes on the machine making the voice, but sometimes its handier to do the a...

I prefer the screw on mini-jack to 1/4" plugs like on the Audio-Technica M30. Metal with spring strain relief. Better than having to use this: http://www.electronicsnmore.com/images/caa18.gif Well, depending on how much traffic you have coming through. If it's low, it's relatively easy to keep trac...

Well, if you're thinking about eventual listening, there's no harm in getting a great sounding hi-fi receiver. A nice, working 70's solid state receiver could be picked up at a reasonable price if you're patient and know what to look for.
