Re: Any advice on Tascam 8-tracks?

I have a 388 and it's great. Easy to use and tape costs are low; $8-10 per reel of 7" Quantegy 457 1/4" tape. A 1/2" 8-track Tascam (model TSR-8, 38, 80-8 or pro-model 48/58) in good working order will sound better sonically than a 388; more lows and highs. They will also cost more to repair, mainta...

Go with the Masterlink. Don't waste your money or time on a DAT.

Re: GC selling cheap Oktava condensers

I bought a pair last week from GC. Don't know if they're mismatched, leftovers or picked over units, but I used one on an acoustic guitar and it worked great. Can't go wrong with the sound you get for 2 for $99.

Re: 100 Greatest Guitar Players

These kind of lists are just indicative of how disposable and short-sighted modern America's "pop" culture really is. Any list that doesn't have the following is just plain wrong: Charlie Christian - Anyone remember him? RS didn't. Django Reinhardt - The gypsy jazzer did make 78's, after all. Andres...

Re: Where do you guys buy your tape?

In Northern California, try Arcal (http://www.arcal.com/index.html), 1/2" 456 runs $35.00 a reel. In Southern California, try Project One in N. Hollywood(www.projectone.com), they charge around $40 per reel over the counter. Both ship mail order.

Forget Sam Ash and GC, they charge $50 per reel.

Re: why bad musicians play loud part 2

Many bad musicians use volume as a way to try and make up for their lack of ability. I agree that it might be that bad musicianship is more "irritating" than good playing.

Fact is, good musicianship is beyond the reach of many.

Re: Acoustic Guitar pickups

The Dean Markley acoustic pickups work OK. I have a single-coil and humbucker model. Neither sounds like a "real acoustic guitar" sound, but live you can get a reasonable amount of volume from them before feedback.

Re: Storm Brewing Over TapeOp Subscription Policy?

At least the TapeOp crew is telling everyone that they will send your info to companies. Most others sell your info to whomever and whatever and tell you nothing.

Re: Analog Tape costs...

If you're recording analog on a big budget, buy new tape. If you're not, like the majority of the rest of us, give tapetape's "used" tape a try. I've had few problems with tapetape. You can save a bunch, especially on 1" and 2" tape, which they sell for less than 1/2 the street price of new tape.

Re: RMI Keyboards!!

Quasi's keyboard player used to use a RMI with a fuzzbox... I believe he uses a synth sample now. It's not a versatile sound like a Wurli or a Rhodes, more of a retro rock piano sound when clean, a real distinctive distorted piano when used with a fuzzbox.

Re: good mixing/ tracking headphones?

I have some Audio-Technica ATM40fs; they aren't as bright or aggressive, but are neutral sounding and are easy on the ears. A-T's customer service is great, as well.
