Re: Paul Simon is kind of a twat, but...

I dunno, but I don't really get the twat reference....maybe Paul Simon doesn't fit the profile of cool to you guys, but he's a fucking good guitarist/songwriter in my book. A true musical innovator and a great lyricist too. Well, I've read a lot of interviews with him (he shows up in every book on ...

Paul Simon is kind of a twat, but...

"Bookends" is one of the most perfect albums ever. Such fabulous songs, incredible arrangements, friggin' genius guitar parts, there's virtually nothing wrong with it. Perhaps a case could be made for Artie's "voices of old people" track being surplus to requirements, but still... I've been listenin...

Re: it was 24 years ago today

Oh fuck that PC shit. Yoko sucked. Her performance art was sophomoric and her music is unfucking listenable. John proved that love is not only blind, but fucking tone deaf as well. "Don't worry Kyoko, Mommy's Looking for Her Talent in the Snow." "Woman is The Nigger of the World..." Please.... Pax,...

Re: Holy crap! I love tape!!! 15ips RULES!

Surely we can all agree that one should use whatever tools one has to record the music at hand, taht's the whole deal. really. That said, it has been years since I've had as satisfying a recording experience as the stuff I recorded with Roger a few weeks ago. We tracked "keeper" acoustic and drums (...

Re: FOR SALE CASIO SK-1.........RMI ELECTRA-PIANO

For the record, I have an RMI sitting in my kitchen and that bastard ends up on every record I do. It's perfect for that moment when you've exhausted other options and you starts to wonder "What would Linda McCartney do in this spot?" Well worth $200.

embarassingly basic Reason question

Thhis is so entry level that I can't even bring myself to put it in the Reason thread. Can we starta sticky labeled "caveman analog poeple taking baby steps into digital recording"? I hate to ask, but how do you make it make sound? I got it with my M Box and I've bought a book called Reason Power an...

Re: best amp simul.: Vox Tonelab vsPOD vs Sansamp vsGuitarRi

I must be missing something. I've got Amplitude and it seems like there are only about 6 useable sounds and they aren't really that great. Seriously, I may actually be missing somethiing! Anybody have any settings they'd recommend?

Re: In The Court of the Crimson King

I've got a strange affinity for the John Wettton years. He's kind of the ultimate prog dinosaur mainstream guy and the Clash records in my collection shudder at this admission, but I've always really liked his voice. Also, his bass tone with distorted tele bass through a Hiwatt is just beastly on Re...

Re: Classic marshall sounds (for recording)

Just to be a trouble maker, let me state my long held belief that a good Hiwatt makes most Marshalls sound like a toy.

Flame on, I can take it.

Re: Whoops! (a.k.a. Milli Simpson)

I know I'm a truly rotten person for finding this so amusing, but I had this horrible car- wreck fascintaion with her reality show. I kept finding myself watching it and all the bullshit artistic posturing- her talking about what a struggle it is to stay true to her musical vision and presenting her...

Re: Otari MX7300 1" 8 track - Am I crazy to buy this?

For $300, it's worth giving it a shot. If you get it restored (and, of course, that will cost a lot of money), you'll have a killer machine- and one that you'll be very personally invested in. Plus, you'll learn a lot in the process.

Re: Acoustic guitar strings

I actually just got back from an acoustic guitar trek to good shop in NH (I convinced the wife it was to look at the foliage and then "hey, you know, I think there's supposed to be a cool guitar store near here.") and spent about an hour playing all sorts of crazy expensive guitars- and confirming s...

Re: does anyone know how to contact jon brion?

Those Aimee mann albums are so good. I believe that was the first major thing Jon Brion got involved in. He was dating her at the time and I remember seeing him playing in a version of 'Til Tuesday at the time. I think it was a great situation of a pop freak meeting up with like minded people at Q D...

Re: Gibson acoustic gtr challenge!!

Personally, my life goal is to own a 60's J-200, but I understand that some people find them hard to record (seems to me there are pretty decent acoustic tones on Tommy, Quadrophenia and All Thing Must Pass- all done with J200s- and Emmylou Harris hasn't been too hampered all these years). Hummingbi...

Re: I want to buy a Vox AC30. What do I need to know first??

Well, there's a lot to be said for actually owning an old AC 30. There certainly are tons of boutique copies out there (and Rog's opinion in these matters is certainly worth noting), but an original AC 30 in good shape is a pretty serious experience. They're finicky amps, but it's worth it.
