Re: mastering, limiter, diy.

You should probably hire MoreSpaceEcho  but otherwise if you are wondering where to look for a mastering engineer that might share the sonic aesthetic you are going for, look at your favorite records that are in the same vein and figure out who mastered them and hire that mastering engineer. A...

Re: Plug-in suggestions for the minimalist studio

Another vote for the Plugin Alliance subscription. They ran an extended demo period last year when the pandemic hit and i got hooked. The Brainworx stuff is great, also really love the Shadow Hills comp and the Townhouse comp. They also have some pretty decent amp sims and virtual instruments which ...

Re: What format for deliverables?

Definitely agree as far as longevity is concerned. Should have clarified that in my post that the thumb drive is is intended as a way to hand off files for the client to backup as they see fit, and not a be all end all long term solution. Multiple backups in multiple locations are really the only wa...

Re: What format for deliverables?

In addition to the good advice everyone else has posted, data storage has become super cheap in recent years, flash drives up to like 128GB can be had for less than $20 usually. One thing I've started doing is getting a fresh one at the beginning of a session to use for physical backups on a project...

Re: instrument DI box bang-for-buck

I've been experimenting more with DI guitars, partially because of covid, and having to track from home during the 1st couple moths of it last year as I lost access to my studio space, but I've also been trying to refine my studio setup for songwriting efficiency, i.e. spend more time writing and re...

Re: Acoustic Space Simulator Reverb Plugins

In addition to what everyone else has said about convolution reverbs, Seventh Heaven (which is a Bricasti M7 Simulation) is brilliant. It's ultra simple to use, sounds fantastic and isn't too pricey.

Re: HOT mix/mastering levels and streaming services

This is something I've been thinking about/dealing with a lot over the last couple years. I definitely do not claim to be a mastering expert but have found a few things to be true when it comes to mastering with streaming services in mind: You will drive yourself mad if you try to master to a specif...

Re: shedshrine build 3.0 - furniture, cats, gear and enlightenment, man

My first guitar teacher had a Westone guitar with a similar body style to the basses y'all have been posting. She had a nice Tele and a Les Paul, some quality acoustics and some other things but for whatever reason 6th grade me always gravitated to the Westone. I love this thread, it's making me nos...

Re: UA Luna

The NAMM roll out was a bit ridiculous, but there's a couple features they mentioned that i do find attractive. Definitely like the idea that adjusting gain and so forth within the DAW is also 1 for 1 adjusting the gain of the preamp itself. Also like that the monitoring controls are just simply par...

Re: Onboard Guitar Pre-Amps/Boosters

hell yeah, sounds like it all these mods are making for a unique instrument, definitely a bonus that you could get it sorted without having to route new cavities in the thing. Is the onboard boost sounding pretty comparable to what the micro amp was doing?

Re: Hardware Compressors for vocals on a budget

pretty much all the lower end 2 ch dbx compressors like the 266 will produce acceptable results in a situation like this when you're just trying to keep the dynamics of singers in check. the various 160 variants would work well too and can be found used pretty cheap. presonus acp-88 would work fine ...

Re: Onboard Guitar Pre-Amps/Boosters

if you love the combo of the pickup plus a micro amp, why not stuff a micro amp circuit in there between the pickup and the pickup selector? definitely a bunch of schematics out there, and they aren't too complicated of a circuit so it could be built pretty small when you lose the footswitch, maybe ...

Re: reference listening

The upside of CD's going more and more out of fashion is the used market is plentiful and cheap. So scooping up some classic albums and ripping them to uncompressed files to have on hand for reference is a good option. Also purchasing from bandcamp is a good option as well for newer material as you ...

or you could get somthing like this: http://www.lividinstruments.com/hardware_builder.php#brainjr or this: http://store.highlyliquid.com/collections/midi-controllers/products/midi-cpu more expensive than the other options but it's software/hardware designed for the task at hand. you could make a bra...
