If it works, it's probably worth lugging because they're not very big. If it's a Teac, it's going to have only RCA jacks (with rare exceptions). Probably not what you're looking for in a mixdown deck in any case if you're looking for 'professional' results. These kinds of decks have a particular sou...

I've come up with a few philosophies dealing with this (mainly with my own screwed up recordings!): 1. There is always a creative solution to a creative problem! (helps a lot to keep this in mind) 2. Your brain may no longer be the boss! 3. Don't be a chicken-$hit; Do it rough and do it $hitty! (sto...

Learn by fucking up the compression in the mix. Several advantages to doing it this way: 1. It's easier to hear what you're doing if you can keep playing back and tweaking as many times as you want without boring/tiring the drummer. 2. If you like how you fucked up, then you're finished. 3. If you ...

I don't recommend "compressing the hell out of" anything until you really know what you're doing with compression. It's a good way to ruin tracks in a way that can't be un-ruined later. This is true, but I'm going to play devils advocate for a second. Fucking things up is a great way to learn. If h...

i think the drums sound fine in the track ... there is nothing really arresting about the performance though, a little bit 'limp'. i don't think there's anything offensive happening sonically. are you recording to tape (I noticed a tape deck in your photo)? The reason I ask is that the drums don't s...

if you must use 4 mics, flip a coin ! hmm, honestly I would try out each way and see which sounds better ... both will yield a different effect ... compressing the overheads will give a more 'room' sound; compressing the kick and snare will give you more dynamics control and consistency and fatten u...

are you talking about an actual '60s drum sound, or a modern 'retro' drum sound (like the one posted in the youtube link)? big difference. almost no one compressed individual instruments in the '60s, at least not in America (some British groups did [Beatles for instance]). The final mix was usually ...

I've been selling full-length CDs for the last 3.5 years and the sales have REALLY dwindled to almost nothing in the last year. put out a 7" EP and have already sold more records in the last 2 weeks than I've sold CDs in the last year. and it's a vinyl-only release ... no downloads and not availabl...

There are so many ways to get people interested in your music that do not involve giving it away to consumers. You just have to get creative. If you can't think of any examples, I don't know what to tell you. I could make a list of my own personal ideas, but that might not work for you ... you have ...

641 will sound cool if you want a '60s type sound. it's also way more stable than most of the tapes that came later.

if you want it to sound like the '60s, I recommend just using 1 or 2 mics (kick and overhead) and don't use the compressor.

My band, The Variety Hour, just had our 'CD Release' show at our town's most-popular club on a Friday night. We are not that big a deal, and don't have throngs of fans. We experimented by handing out our CDs to folks before our set and scattering some more on some tables and booths. On our 'merch' ...
