Re: FMR RNP opinions?
It's certainly not a 'porno' preamp, but for the amateur set accustomed to Mackie/Behringer/ART, this is a significant upgrade in signal path. You can plug in any old 57 or 58, and get smashing results, clean but with muscle. Put up an ordinary EV 635a, and you can get a really nice acoustic or voca...

Re: buyer's remorse.. any suggestions?
AKG C3000B Get to know the mic's limitations (overly bright and lacking in low end) and strengths (can handle high SPL), and adjust your technique accordingly. If it's vocals, setting the mic up in a closet/makeshift vocal booth/deadened space can help minimize nasty reflections that help this mic ...

did you buy your analog multitrack on Ebay?
Did you buy your analog deck on Ebay? If so, how was your transaction? I found a clean TSR-8 on Ebay, and have had it for a year with only minor problems. The ad was really good, though, with close up photos and concrete description, all positive feedback. Some folks have very obviously been less th...

Re: Need Mic Pre advice
I recently picked up an RNP, and it has noticeably improved my signal chain. $475 was a big gulp for my amateur ass, but it makes ALL of my mics sound better.

Re: Live sound ? Banana connectors/binding posts
Thanks for the response A.L.!
I opened up one of the 1/4" connectors, and lo and behold, the insulation is color coded red and black like the binding posts.
Thanks again!

Live sound ? Banana connectors/binding posts
Hi, I picked up a used QSC power amp that I will use for PA. It has binding post/banana connectors. I also bought 2 x 16 AWG speaker cables with 1/4" connectors. I need to remove a 1/4" connector on each for proper connection to the amp outs. 1) Should I substitute banana connectors for the 1/4" con...

Re: 421 vs. c3000
I find the C3000 rather harsh and unflattering. Works okay on some vocals, and handles high SPL, but those are about the nicest things I can say. Sounds rather cheap given the price.
A lot of folks here recommend the Audio Technica 4033/4040 as an alternative to the C3000.

Re: old tapes gumming on heads
Some of the folks on RAP say they are wary of any 456 that is branded Ampex. Before doing this research I bought a 'one pass' reel of 456 on Ebay; identical packaging as the 456 I bought new in '98, but the reel was total sticky shed hell. Perhaps someone has a method of identifying sticky shed BEFO...

uses for ill-informed gear purchases
I'm curious what you do with the gear you SHOULDN'T have bought because you didn't know better at the time. I'm talking ART, Behringer, cheapass mics, etc. You KNOW you have some of that stuff. Let's be honest. For instance, the ART Toob Pack gets used for the occasional gritty bass DI while trackin...

Re: Budget All-Purpose Microphone
EV 635a or PL5 (same thing, green paint). Really the same sort of 'sleeper' mic as the SM57. Very nice on guitar amps, but the 'openness' makes it cool acoustic guitar and vocals. Others have mentioned drums and piano. Does a better job on vocals than my Rode NT1000 (i know, i know). It just has a s...

Re: Is there a way to induce phase problems?
would this work with dynamic mic's as well? It should work; you would probably need to stay closer to the drum kit, and the results might not be so obvious, but there would still be phase issues. If you have dynamic mics, put one right on the snare, and another on the snare pointing back toward the...

Re: Is there a way to induce phase problems?
One way would be to mic a kit with 2 condensers, one up close to the snare, one back further. Record the drummer; move the second mic back and forth while recording. Put both tracks up in mono, and listen to the playback. You should hear some pretty scary comb filtering and phase problems. Or record...
