I've been selling full-length CDs for the last 3.5 years and the sales have REALLY dwindled to almost nothing in the last year. put out a 7" EP and have already sold more records in the last 2 weeks than I've sold CDs in the last year. and it's a vinyl-only release ... no downloads and not availabl...

what kind of tape is it? some older tapes (like Scotch 175) squeal but don't go sticky. baking will actually make this tape worse, since it's dried out (I think it's a loss of lubricant issue).

These tapes are likely on 7" reels; NEVER BAKE PLASTIC REELS!

this will be a funny novelty in a few years when all the tape machines are still running strong and everything you guys are using to record to will be obsolete.

this is like some retro futuristic thing where everyone thought we'd have flying cars by now.

people will always eat, have sex, ... and play physical music.

The best use I've found for these kind of decks in a recording setup is for tape echo. ... outside of the studio, they are quite useful for recording demos, rehearsals, etc ... or buying lots of old tapes people recorded in the '60s-'70s at thrift store, eBay, etc. or making really long mix tapes fr...

this is a totally personal subjective thing. a lot of good records were made with 2-band. i think EQ is a thing that you can do more harm than good with unless you really know what you're doing. the board i've mixed all of my stuff through only has a 2-band and i've often thought back to how much i ...

I felt that the drums (mostly snare) were too loud in the verse on your mix ... then the drums come down in volume during the choruses. The distorted guitars sounded better on your mix though (a little thin on the original).

Nick Sevilla: "3.- Figure out Exactly what it is you want to do in this career field." MichaelAlan: "3. That's the hard part I guess.... " This is the root of your problem. This is the first step. interesting. I've never tried 632 on anything serious ... it seems like the bias is way different than 202 ... is that right? I might be thinking of something else like 404. 632 is super common and super cheap, and seems indestructible, so it certainly makes a good choice. I have a pretty decent sta...

great info ... The whale oil thing has been hotly debated (I've read some very knowledgeable people dismiss it on the Ampex list), but I suspect you're right and that it had SOMETHING to do with it. I wish I could remember the details (I can't seem to find the info online), but Scotch 175 seems to h...

hmm ... are you sure it's sticky-shed and not another form of deterioration? I have a couple rolls of early '90s 996 that behave OKAY but not great ... strange dropouts, etc. I wasn't using them for anything critical, but I noticed that is was shedding some kind of white gunk. The most stable tapes ...

interesting that you rate the 440 last. I have a 440 mono and i think it's kind of in a different league than the Japanese stuff.
i'm rating it best..perhaps my wording made it seem in reverse order..
ha! we're in 100% agreement then; I would choose the same order.
