i feel like if you're going for something "distressed sounding" it might be fun to get something that sounds pretty wrong and doing your damnest to make it sound better. That's not to say you should get or find something that's straight shitty sounding, but maybe just see what your friends have that...

just about the RMG: i've used that tape ever since i couldn't get quantegy anymore (the first time), and have never had any problems with stretching or shedding or anything. I had way more trouble with sheddy (new) 456 than i did with any RMG stuff. I've never had the pleasure of using ATR tape, how...

yeah, i always look at online gear lists as something more for visiting engineers (or savvy musicians, as studiom said), so they know what they're dealing with when they come to work there. I think for more private studios, it's way less of a big deal.

I sling beers to folks two days a week at a really awesome bar here in arlington. It frees me up enough that i can pretty much say "yes" to any audio work that comes down the pike without having to lose (relatively) predictable income. Most of the people I work with are musicians.

Some of the the coolest 4-track-related articles i've ever read were in the first Tape Op book. I'd recommend checking that out. Also, as Mane said, read the manual.
