I absolutely love mine. I modded the tone stack a bit to make the highs a little less fizzy and set it up for remote switching.

Have you checked to see how freely the bearing moves? It's the one that the felt tension spring presses against.

Are you talking about this happening with or without the tape? If it's WITH the tape, I would suspect the tape is sticking to the heads. If it's WITHOUT the tape I would suspect either too much pressure from the pinch roller solenoid (a google search turns up the service notes and how to adjust this...
