When I want to do this I use a multi band compressor. yeah ... that electric strumming + distressed/cheap sounding mono organ sound intro reminded me of "melon collie ..." era pumpkins. I did not write this song. it's a very long story. The short version of it is that this is my boss's girlfriend's song (though I didn't know she was dating him at the time I agreed to work on it). In any case, she sent me the acapella, and I did the rest. I need this to be good. For a lot of reasons...

you could always midi it up.
get a nice string library to get the "ensemble" aspect he was looking for, then mix the real cello part up front on top of that so it doesn't sound so fake.
