Re: Basement recording: using the room effectively
If you have lots of flat hard surfaces I would. 1.try and diffuse these walls with angled hard surfaces that are random and cover a good portion of the wall, this will allow for the room to remain live sounding but not as harsh and "direct" sounding. Such as sheets of 1/2" or 1/4" plywood.you can mo...

Re: stupidest/worst mistake you've made in a session
I've done stupid stuff in sessions like erase a kick track to plugging a ribbon into phantom power.OOPS! The mic was fine. One story I have is recording a whole album in 3 days and trying to mix all ten songs on a fourth day.The band absoluty insited on getting it mixed in one day, too cheap to spen...

Re: tech hospitality
Leave it alone, and powered up,if it will. The tech will probably want to run some test to see what is going on.Gather all and any schematics and manuals for the console and have those ready for the tech to use.Write down details as the performance of the console right before it went down, and any thi...

Re: Whats the Best tape to use with a tascam 388?
I had one of those 388 machines for like 5 years ,loved it.I used 456 or the 467 reels .That machine is not really designed for any high output tape such as GP9 or SM900 .Check on ebay for one pass 7" reels of 456 or 467.Also check out www.tapetape.com for used one pass reels.

Re: tips on creating depth in your mixes.
Thank you for a post that is well needed.I also agree that more and more albums lack spatiality.Maybe more people should start laying off of their Plug-in compressors on every track and spend a little more of their time listening to mic placement and choosing the right ones for the song. I have been...

Re: i need some help with smpte
I would avoid doing this. These 2 machines have very unreliable transports. If you can get them to do it,then good luck to you. When it comes to syncing you also need a way to sync the transports to a clock source such as video black burst to get them to stay in time with each other. If I do recall the...

Re: mixing in the box? duh? or huh?
I agree that you can get a better sound with a GOOD analog outboard mixer. It all boils down to summing, and analog does a better job. However a few years down the line and.......... I agree and I can't wait .I love the ability of recall and automation. But I still love the organic none DAW approach...

Re: mixing in the box? duh? or huh?
I do Both. If the client needs to be able to do massive edits and recalls then I'll tack the 2" tape to a studio and transfer the tracks in at 88.2k and transfer the files over to 44.1k in PT.Which is real easy. then take it back to my studio and load stuff in to my 001. I have an adat I/O so I have...

Re: Best cheap console for the money?
I find that if you can save the money and learn some about electronics you can get a broadcast console that sounds a whole hell of allot better for a little bit more cash.My partner ChemicalPink picked up a 40 channnel ADM console for like $3700 from a TV station. They paid $80,000 for it in the 80's...

Re: gear and minimalism

Re: EXTRA A/D INPUTS for Digi 001 ?
my partner (the more digital savy half of the studio) uses a tango box he got for $250 he says the converters sound as good or better than the 001, shit with a low res digital box like the 001 buy somthing cheap and save your penies for a more kickass system with a shit-ton of inputs and outputs do...

Re: yeah yeah yeahs vocals
I like using a tube guitar amp with a cheap mic or reamping the vocals through a guitar amp, mic'n the room about 20 feet away with 2 spread omnis. then mix to taste. We did alot of this on the Erase Errata's "other animals"
