I spent some time working on/modifying these units a few years ago. I ended up deciding I was better off removing (almost) all the existing components and using it as a blank slate for building a preamp, rather than just doing minimum modifications to the existing circuit. In stock form, there's a l...

good point, although I'm not sure I have enough space for a console big enough to do that. One thing I always wonder about workflow with a split console: I'm in the habit of sending the tape machine healthy levels of everything, then building a rough mix in the monitor/tape return section while trac...

Let's talk about analog console workflow
Been thinking about the workflow and ergonomics of analog consoles lately since I've been thinking about upgrading. Right now I've got a Tascam m520 that I've been working on for about 7 years, and while I like some things about it, I've never been happy with the workflow it seems to force on me. As...

Work with the ramsa until you find what you're missing. Could be workflow....could be headroom ....could be something else. +1. For me, it took a few years of regularly working on an analog board (Tascam M520, which I still have) to get a good sense of what I really wanted from an ideal console. St...

Otari MX5050 BQII owner's/service manual
trying to find the service manual for this seemingly less common variant of the MX5050. It's a 1/4" 4 track. If anyone has a digital copy they can send my way (or a hard copy they wanna sell me), let me know. I imagine it's similar enough to the other versions of the MX5050 that I could figure thing...

Odds & Ends - Neotek, Sony C48 case, AGFA 1/2" tape
Cleaning out the studio, found some clutter that could actually be useful to someone. I'm willing to let any of this stuff go for the price of shipping. PM me if you wanna see pictures. Thanks for looking. GONE Neotek Series 1 channel extender card, used for servicing channels while still connected ...

I've got a Tektronix 2215. works great, got it for maybe $100 on Ebay. Pretty standard 2 channel scope, 60 MHz bandwidth I think, which is sort of overkill for analog stuff. I wish I could find a place to get it serviced/calibrated but it seems to be accurate enough for my needs at the moment. Tektr...

according to his website, Salt Mastering does analog tape mastering with no digital delay processing. I've never used him though. Golden Mastering accepts analog tape, not sure whether it's a truly no-digital-processing thing though. I've used them a couple times (sending digital masters) and had gr...

Sounds like it could be an issue with the jacks or some associated switch/plug (maybe the 4-pin DIN plug). As far as I can tell all the inputs end up using the same basic circuitry but the line and mic inputs go through some switches and plugs to get there so that's where I'd start looking for a bro...

one other thing to consider about repairing these mics, not everyone will replace the ribbon with the same style originally used in the mic. When I bought a couple of these they had been re-ribboned using a more "traditional" corrugation pattern. One of the reasons I had mine re-done at Samar audio ...
