I've had some success with a ribbon on the keys and an omni down by the bell, mixed together.

Makes you wonder how these GSM phones make it through FCC testing, right? That's a very annoying form of interference that happens to recordists and regular old consumers when they are using any sort of stereo system. Start recommending that your musician friends buy CDMA phones. Full disclaimer: I ...

The more brute force method would be splice together a special cable that goes from whatever connector you have on the source audio to alligator clips. With the alligator clips, you can clamp on to the edge connector pads that correspond to the input of the circuit. It's not going to be the best con...

San Diego recording space to share

Hola, My roommate/studio partner is moving out next month so there is an opportunity for a like-minded individual to move into The Habitat and share in the recording goodness. $925/month gets you your very own bedroom and bathroom as well as weekday rights to recording in the studio. Check out the s...

There's always the classic fake accidental pushing of the talk back while saying something obnoxious about the recording musician. heh

Obviously only to be done when you're on the best of terms with your clients. :-)

I mix to a Lavry AD-10 which goes to a Tascam HD-P2. After being recorded to the Tascam, I connect it with firewire to the computer and transfer a file over. I could just go back through my Apogee AD-16X, but my philosophy is that the Apogee's have a somewhat colored sound for tracking, but when it ...

cool project, Aaron. I'm wondering if the performance might be improved by getting rid of the diff line receivers and balanced line drivers, and doubling the crosspoint switches to route diff pairs throughout the unit. I'm just thinking that the less the signal has to go through, the better. And sin...

Yeah, I'd go with one mic, find the sweet spot, compress it judiciously, eq it to taste. I've gotten some pretty rad drums that way.

I'm not saying you shouldn't switch, but Vegas 9 does let you move audio at the sample level (basically the only audio upgrade to Vegas 9).

Topic: Tascam 38 or 388 owners - what's required for maintenance?

Buy some spare fuses for it because that's the first thing to check when something goes funky. Also, one day a belt on the back may get loose and fall off. It happened to two 388 owners I know. and you will find this useful: http://www.thehabitat.info/Tascam388_TrackSheet.pdf go forth and conquer. Roy

Oh you know what... I mistook your machine for the Tascam 388. my bad...

I guess my suggestion was still somewhat valid anyhow.
Maybe some of the caps are going bad. Might be worth replacing some of the big electrolytics that should be hanging off the main DC power rails.

First thing to check on that machine are the fuses. Sounds like you could have one or more that are going resistive on you. So instead of just checking continuity on them, measure their resistances to see if one is reading an unusually high value. Just an educated guess...

You say the room is dry and in my experience that usually takes care of most of the job of getting a dry drum sound. So maybe it's not as dry as you think it is or maybe the largeness of the room is playing against you. I would put the drums in one of the corners and then close off the rest of the o...

All circuits have noise, my friends. Even a resistor just sitting there can be a source of noise (although very very small). Any gain stage is going to have a noise floor associated with it. And noise that exists at the input of the gain stage will be amplified more and more as you turn the gain up....

Before you do anything, I would go get a book like Home Recording Studio, Build it Like the Pros. It's going to give you some useful info about getting isolation between your control room and tracking room (assuming you care about such things). It also will give you some ideas about what's important...
