Re: Best way to spend $
You seem to have an excess of AKG mics... can you get any of the Shure LDC's at cost? Something like a KSM 27/32/44 would be a nice contrast to the AKG mics.

Re: Labeling cables, I need a good idea.
Just assign them serial numbers, and keep a spreadsheet. It seems like it would be a hassle, but after you've reassigned a couple inter-room cables it'll be the best idea since non-pre-chewed gum.

"nonpolarized" should be all you need to know... "no polarity", so either way is fine.

Re: In Defense of Beringer - The Final Word
Behringer gear is sort of like the tools you buy at the drugstore so you can fix your car in a pinch - you know they're cheap, they certainly look cheap, but they usually hold together long enough to solve your problem. To some extent, all that pursuit of perfection was to get decent sound at the en...

Re: vocal effects
I don't claim to be any smarter... I've just seen too many cool local bands scrape together enough money for an album, only to end up with an over-engineered, over-effected mess.

Re: good soldering iron
Ideally you'd spend $100+ on a good soldering station...
But you can do pretty well with a quality soldering iron from Radio Shack or another place. You want something around 30-35 watts, with a nice sharp point. Weller irons seem to last the longest.

Re: so i finally built the tapeop omnis...
what kind of difference do you see by making those caps smaller? or is it just a case of the 1ufs being overkill? Smaller caps will raise the low-frequency cutoff. I think that 1uF was indeed a bit of overkill (at least for musical applications), and physically too large anyway. It's a lot easier t...

Less is more - don't let the engineer talk you into using a lot of effects.

Re: most efficient sessions
I'm a live sound guy, but I suspect it relates... it's important if the engineer knows when to take charge of the soundcheck (setup and getting sounds). Left to themselves the artists will just noodle on their instruments, when really they're happier if the engineer takes control and gets it all don...

Re: Tube stuff
Yup, 300+ volts, with a correspondingly low current. Tubes are voltage devices, whereas transistors are current devices and so run much lower voltages. You can sort of run a tube at low voltages, but to get linear (non-distorted) operation you have to get the voltage up there.

Re: CAD M179 mic review
This evening I tried out a nice bunch of mics for vocals, including the M179. For the purposes of this thread... the M179 was too bright on my voice. Still sounded really good on the acoustic guitar, at least. (The winner was a three-way tie between the CAD E-100, the Sennheiser 441, and the deluxe ...

Most good-quality SD condensors seem to work pretty well. Avoid the hyped-treble ones. The ubiquitous Oktava MK-012 are nice.

Re: so i finally built the tapeop omnis...
It's a completely different circuit, but those things are so simple it's not a big deal just to make separate setups. Or just do everything Linkwitz mod... I've got a standard phantom power supply design for modded capsules, and so I just mod everything I do. Check out the Panasonic WM-55A capsule -...

Re: Studio rules? (Long.)
I guess it would be silly to have people sign anything, but maybe I can just write something up detailing my expectations and whatnot, keep it humorous, and just give them a copy so they know where I'm coming from. The problem with just vocalising things is that I think everyone will only remember ...
