Re: Echoplex Alternatives for "Nebraska" reverb

i concur on the line 6 delay...really versatile and cheap. the space echo is still cooler due to it's unpredictable nature, but there's a lot of sounds to be had from the line 6. i pretty much only use my space echo on mixes. i can't gain stage it right using it in front of an amp...my strat can't d...

Re: #@!$ing Snare!

there's people who don't like compression on drums? sheesh. regarding hihat bleed in the shell mic, i usually have the mic 4-5" off the snare, right under the hihat. there's lots of bleed from everything. i think it sounds good. obviosly it doesn't work if the drummer is wailing on the hats ...

Re: #@!$ing Snare!

i concur about the solo button. although i do feel things shouldn't sound "bad" soloed.... also a fan of the shell mic, and not too big on the 57 on the top head. but if you are gonna go with the 57 maybe try it more parallel to the head rather than pointing right down on it.... seems if the drum so...

Re: Red light district...mmmmm

i record to computer, but often run tracks out to my analog deck and back for some tape squash. makes a BIG difference. i've actually been pretty pleased with the drum sounds i've gotten straight to digi, but as soon as you hear 'em off tape, it's no contest. distorted guitar too, sounds so much mor...

Re: How to fake a blues recording from the 1920's?

the woefully named 'grungelizer' plug in for cubase is actually pretty effective for this kinda thing....static, surface noise, super midrangey eq, etc.

but recording with some funky mic is much cooler. try the egg, or a green bullet maybe...

Re: Basement recording: using the room effectively

i too used to record in a basement. the low ceiling is going to be your biggest enemy, but you can make it work. i made the mistake of putting carpet up everywhere and totally deadening the room. don't be dumb like me. treat the room just enough to get rid of any standing waves. clap your hands and ...

yeah the at mics are good. i'm forever recommending the 4040. a 421 or 441 would probably be a better bet though...

Re: Snare Mics

441 rocks on snare. i don't have one so i've been using an at4040 on the shell lately. have also gotten good results with an oktava 219 and a sennheiser md409, although that one would probably need a little top eq. shure ksm 141 is also nice....

Re: Tuning a Gretsch Broadkaster kick

Apologies for butting in beezleborf, I was just interested in the above points. If I'm interpreting them correctly both mike and MSE are saying that a full resonant head will tend to create a boomier kick sound. That's really interesting. Can anyone offer anymore comments on this - like where to pl...

Re: drum tuning...how come...?

i think rodgre's got it: my drums are crap. :D i agree, if you're resorting to lots of tape/muffling you're doing something wrong. plenty of times i've noticed a nasty ring on my snare, and all it is is one lug came loose. crank that and the ring disappears. one thng i was doing wrong was trying to ...

Re: The LOUD mastering bug has got me.

sort of on topic....i got a ride to my folks' house with my brother yesterday, he likes the mainstream heavy music, and we had his cds to pick from. so first we listened to some of the new jimmy eat world cd. and i'm not a fan but i had to admit that the modern ultracompressed supersize production d...
